During my time as a thesis intern at Aegon, I joined the market methodology team. Within this team I shed light on whether spread earnings in the context of an insurance portfolio can be predicted with advanced statistical and machine learning methods. I used a variety of dimension reduction techniques and concluded that they could not outperform the most simple methods. This confirmed the complexity in forecasting the spread.
