I'm a graduate of UNC's dual master's program in City & Regional Planning and Public Health. I'm very interested in the reciprocal interaction between humans and their environment, how we shape our cities, and how they, in turn, shape how we live and travel. Ultimately, I'm more of an urban planner, but my public health coursework gave me insight into behavioral theory and a strong foundation in research design and methodology that informs my work in planning on a daily basis. For the past ten years, I've held a hybrid role as GIS manager and urban planner, which is a role that I really enjoy. I love the number-crunching, analytical, investigative part of this work just as much as I love the creative problem-solving around visualizing the data and creating compelling maps. In a typical day, I might use Word, Excel, ArcGIS Pro, a smidgen of Python, American Fact Finder, Photoshop, InDesign, ArcGIS Online, LEHD on the Map, and SketchUp, and that couldn't make me happier.

Research AssistantHighway Safety Research Center May 2012 - May 2014I worked in the Pedestrian & Bicycle Information Center conducting research and creating outreach materials pertaining to bicycle and pedestrian safety. In 2012, I wrote a comprehensive literature review of pedestrian safety engineering measures and I recently finished a second document of bicycle safety engineering measures. These literature reviews were intended to compliment the PEDSAFE and BIKESAFE documents. I also create materials for technical and non-technical audiences; examples included editing a three-module introductory course on pedestrian and bicycle planning for engineering undergraduates, and case studies about successful pedestrian and bicycle projects for our organization's website.

Research Assistant: Blue Ridge Road Corridor Health Impact AssessmentUnc Departments Of City Planning And Environmental Engineering Jun 2012 - Sep 2013I worked with Daniel Rodriguez from UNC's Department of City and Regional Planning and Jackie MacDonald Gibson from the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering on small team conducting a Health Impact Assessment (HIA). The Health Impact Assessment sought to quantify the health benefits associated with the implementation of a small area plan focused on increasing density, diversifying land use, and enhancing connectivity in the Blue Ridge Road Corridor in Raleigh, North Carolina. The focus of the HIA was how walkability motivates people to work and bike more, and the long-term health implications of increased physical activity. I helped design and administer surveys, cleaned and managed survey data, analyzed data using Excel and ArcGIS, presented results to our stakeholders, and drafted our official summary report to be presented to policymakers, professionals, and interested laypeople. The summary report that describes our work is attached here.
