In January, 2014 I received my Reiki Master certification and would like to research possible positions in a cancer care hospital/rehabilitation center or a hospice facility utilizing this skill and integrating my nursing expertise. Reiki is a new and exciting area of healing that is currently being used in many nationally known hospitals. As early as 1995, Reiki was in use in hospital operating rooms(1). The American Nurses Association now lists it as an accepted form of care in their nursing "scope and standards of practice" publication (2). In a 2008 USA Today article, it was reported that in 2007, Reiki was offered in (15%) U.S. hospitals as a regular part of patient services.(3)1. Gill, "More hospitals offer alternative therapies for mind, body, spirit," USA Today, September 15, 2008 http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/health/2008-09-14-alternative-therapies_N.htm?loc=interstitialskipThe responsibilities of teaching and mentoring new nurses in the operating room are the job duties I enjoy the most. One of the areas I would also be interested in pursuing is using those skills to obtain a position in a strictly educational setting either at a college or as part of the administration in a teaching hospital. I believe my expertise can be used also to assist in curriculum development and skill progression assessments.I am also currently enrolled in college to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree to fulfill the future requirements of an RN.
