Exploring the intersection of social entrepreneurship and democracy innovation. As a visiting scholar at Berkeley-Haas in the Spring, 2022 I will be exploring the lessons from social entrepreneurship that can be leveraged to support the growth and scaling of pro-democracy and democracy reform organizations. To this end I will be coordinating a semester-long design cycle working with 6 democracy organizations supported by 5-6 coaches with experience in social entrepreneurial efforts in other nonprofit sectors and 12 Haas MBA /Goldman Public Policy MPP candidates working in pairs as paid fellows to address specific infrastructure challenges. For purposes of this project, I am thinking of organizational infrastructure as the systems, protocols, and processes that give structure to the organization, support its key functions, and embed routine practice.

. Substantial is a new non-profit organization dedicated to re-designing how we recruit, train and support substitute teachers in order to maximize that time for teaching and learning. We do this by:• Sharing best practices, tools, and resources to support improvements;• Consulting to districts and schools to help them improve their substitute teaching recruitment, training, and support practices while making substitute teaching a more rewarding and valuable experience;• Advocating for attention and improvement in the substitute teaching ecosystem;• Creating and supporting pipelines from substitute teaching to full-time teaching; and,• Partnering with nonprofit and for-profit organizations to explore substitute teaching as an opportunity for effectively and meaningfully engaging with schools and students.
