Jim started Excel Yachts in 1991 as a developer of high performance sailing projects. In 1994 Excel Yachts developed the Excel 53 "Persuasion", which was an Alan Andrews designed 53 foot high performance IMS oriented racer that was built by Westerly Marine of Santa Ana, CA. "Persuasion" made her debut in the 1993 Newport to Cabo San Lucas Yacht Race winning Class A and soon followed that with 2nd Boat to Finish in Fleet and First Overall in Class B in the 1993 Transpacific Yacht Race. One year later, Jim and Excel teamed up again with Alan and Westerly and built "Excel’s Growler", an ILC 40 Class race boat that went to Hawaii and became part of the historic USA Red Team that won the 1994 Kenwood Cup with "Growler" as the high point boat. It was the first time that a USA team had won the Kenwood Cup in over 20 year.In 1995, Excel was asked to conduct a study on campaigning a Whitbread 60 for the 1997-1998 Whitbread Round the World Race. A six month study ensued which identified the components necessary to put together such a program. Through his efforts, a Newport Beach, CA based Whitbread entry arose called America’s Challenge with Jim as the Boat Project Manager.Jim’s ultimate dream has always been to be involved in an America’s Cup program and in the spring of 1997 he approached the Waikiki Yacht Club with the idea of putting together a challenge for America’s Cup 2000 in Auckland New Zealand. Aloha Racing was born from that dream and in December of ‘97 Aloha Racing became an official challenger for the 2000 America’s Cup which ultimately saw Aloha building two IACC boats, USA 50 and USA 54. Aloha Racing’s "Abracadabra 2000" (USA 54) was eliminated in the America’s Cup challenger elimination series in 2000.
