Transportation Design EngineerMinistry Of Highways And Public Works, Victoria, Bc May 1974 - Apr 1977This position started as a candidate in their Engineer-in-Training Program. I started the program in May 1974, obtained a leave of absence to complete my master's degree in September 1974, returning full time to the program in May 1975. The program involved tours of duty with different branches of the Ministry, varying from two to seven months. While with each branch, the engineer-in-training was expected to learn the internal function and organization of the branch as well as participate in a current project at the branch.I spent seven months with the Planning Branch designing, organizing, managing and analyzing a survey of inter-regional truck traffic in B.C. As another example, I spent two months with the Design & Surveys Branch. The project I worked on involved optimizing the route alignment for a proposed six lane freeway such that the number of river diversions was minimized. These projects involved computer programming, including FORTRAN, IBM OS/360 JCL and SPSS as well as the use of some proprietary highway design programs at the Design and Surveys Branch. In April 1976, I was assigned to the planning branch. My work there involved the continuation of the truck survey as well as arterial network and corridor studies. The arterial network studies involved identifying and developing a system of streets whose primary function was to move traffic. This was done in a multi-disciplinary environment. The congested corridor studies were more specific and tended to concentrate on bottleneck areas where topography and existing land use combined to produce a situation where a large volume of traffic must pass through an area of limited capacity.
