About Jim Barbee
Jim joins linkedin with a wealth of experience in civic engagement, non-profit management, juvenile justice, community mobilization, rural social work and grant management. A graduate of Pfeiffer University with a BA in Criminal Justice and Sociology; attended UNC-Charlotte’s MPA program and graduated from the Non-Profit Management program at Duke University and the Thomas H. Kearn Center for Creative Leadership.As a Police Officer in Statesville, NC, he served on sub-committees leading to the formation of the School Resource Officer program. In 1993, he became a Juvenile Court Counselor with the Administrative Office of the Courts serving the 9th Judicial District developing the Pal-to-Pal program through PeaceWorkz-his first nonprofit venture, a restorative justice program and created the first inter-agency cross information sharing meeting later modeled for Systems of Care. In 1998, he became the Area Consultant for the Office of Juvenile Justice (later DJJDP) in the central area of NC creating several initiatives including the North Central Alliance for Youth which won a national award for innovative programming from the National Association of Development Organizations.In 2006, Jim left DJJDP (now NC DPS) taking the role as the Youth Gang Specialist and Community Impact Manager for the United Way of the Greater Triangle. In 2008, he served as the first Executive Director of the Durham At Risk Youth Collaborative; a nonprofit consortium for independent nonprofits working with at risk youth targeting gang involved youth and school drop outs which later merged with the East Durham Children's Initiative.From 2010-2016, he worked with the UNC School of Social Work, through a grant from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, as the Center Coordinator for the NC Academic Centers for Excellence in Youth Violence Prevention which is the only Academic Center in the country addressing rural youth violence. In 2014, Jim created his 6th non-profit in NC, Robeson County Teen Court & Youth Services, (RCTCYS) and served as its’ part time Executive Director. Through RCTCYS’ expansion into other rural counties in NC, the Board officially renamed the organization to the NC Youth Violence Prevention Center. Jim left UNC, in 2016, to take the role of CEO of the Center providing Community Evidence-Based programs, Victim Services & Support programs and Community Impact programs and initiatives specifically focusing on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), Substance Use Prevention & Education and Community Based Crime Reduction programs.
