Jim was born and raised in San Diego, California. He began his music studies in 4th grade playing the clarinet but was lucky enough to stumble on to the tuba in 7th grade, and enjoyed being in the musical groups at Crawford High School. Since then, he has performed in numerous ensembles, including the San Diego Youth Symphony, San Diego Symphony, and in the Southwest Symphony for the past 27 years. He received a Bachelor’s of Music Education from San Diego State University, and a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from Utah State University. He taught music in public schools in Bakersfield California and Washington County, Utah. He was selected as the Teacher of the Year for Washington County School District, Teacher of the Year by the Utah State Board of Education, Educator of the Year by St. George Chamber of Commerce, and Middle School Teacher of the Year by the Utah Music Educator’s Association. Mr. Brickey retired from the Washington County Schools in 2006, and then became the Music Major Advisor at Dixie State University while teaching courses in Music Theory, Ear Training, Freshman Orientation, and private tuba lessons. In the Spring of 2012, he and his wife Elaine put their comfortable life-style aside, and accepted the call to serve as Full-Time Missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with the specific assignment to labor in the Salt Lake City West Mission. They currently live in the West Valley City area. They attend to the administrative/office duties in the mission, and Jim directs the 95-voice Mission Choir in their monthly performances. Even though they miss their family and friends in St. George, and they are challenged by an exhausting daily schedule, Jim and Elaine love the assignment, and want to continue their service for as long as possible. They are the parents of 8 children and 15 grandchildren.
