I teach UCC NR295 Environmental Dispute Resolution as a sophomore class, one articulated with a similar class taught to students of Oregon State University's Colleges of Forestry and of Natural Resources. This is a basic course that acquaints future natural resources professionals with the fundamental drivers of environmental conflict, a simple method for diagnosing needs for change, and review and application of methods to bring about those changes. Collaboration is a particular focus in these studies, along with peer mediation and other traditional dispute-resolution methods. .The course is an adaptation of a technology-transfer course I previously taught to interested community members at Umpqua Community College.

I give process advice and support to Umpqua Forestry Coalition members. As a group, UFC members are taking strides to overcome environmental gridlock concerning fire resiliency on the Umpqua National Forest. The group is composed of a broad cross-section of people from around Douglas County, representing the full spectrum of interests.

I served as President of the Umpqua Basin Economic Alliance from its inception in 2011 until October 2014, when I took my position as Board Secretary. Non-profit UBEA is dedicated to helping the communities and business of the Umpqua Basin recover from the Great Recession and, in particular, assisting workers to find employment. UBEA currently has five projects underway: bicycle tourism (www.cycleumpqua.com), food supplies and distribution, solar power, development of a county-wide vision, and support to the Roseburg Area Angel Investors Network.

The Downtown Roseburg Association serves as the principal advocate for businesses and property owners in the area. The DRA provides as many as 12 events per year attracting potential clients and customers. In addition, DRA members work closely with the City and other partners on projects and ideas that might enhance the downtown both aesthetically and economically. DRA's Park Smart program regulates parking under contract with the City of Roseburg. While President, in response to member interest, I completed three comprehensive plans for the downtown area: the Heart of Roseburg Initiative (in partnership with NeighborWorks Umpqua and SERVICE Neighborhood Association), ten proposals for parking reform, and the Homeless Transitions Action Group goals and priorities.

The Umpqua Valley Arts Association serves an area the size of Connecticut with predominately visual arts exhibitions, events, and education, both for children and adults. Our Summer Arts Festival is known throughout the Northwest for its great food, drink, music, and crafts. As Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee, I completed a highly detailed strategic plan for the organization, one aimed at strengthening programs for several years and creating a stronger development culture among board members. I also assisted in the development and implementation of an endowment fund policy and procedure as well as revisions to the UVAA Bylaws..

Led the principal non-profit fund-raising organization in Douglas County, serving residents in need through 34 member agencies. Developed and implemented the successful recruitment process for a permanent executive director. Completed a policy paradigm shift begun a year before my appointment. Developed and finished a three-year strategic implementation plan for the new policy. Proposed and completed a budget reflecting the first year of implementation and made associated staff adjustments, eliminating one paid employee.

Coos, Curry, And Douglas Counties, Or

Led disaster-assistance and health-education-service delivery across three rural Oregon Counties, serving a population of about 200,000 people. Administered four employees and over 100 volunteers at different times with response materials and vehicles at three locations hours apart. Led disaster drills and shelter simulations with excellent volunteer support and leadership. Received FEMA and Red Cross Disaster Instructor certifications.

Served in a variety of technical and leadership positions in the fields of communications, public affairs, land management planning, and natural-resource administration. Served as Director of Public Affairs, Deputy Regional Forester (Alaska), acting Regional Forester (17 months, Alaska), and Forest Supervisor (Oregon). Responsible for organizations up to 1,000 employees, permanent and seasonal, and for budgets up to about $120 million annually. Working on the front lines with excellent resource-management professionals, lead the resolution of some of the most difficult environmental disputes in the Forest Service' moderrn and post-modern history. Author and co-author of numerous publications (list available upon request).
