Mechanistic and statistical modeling, and geospatial analysis of pollutant trends and fate/transport within & through watersheds and water bodies, currently focused on nitrogen and phosphorus. Scientific leader and primary spokesperson for extramural chemical safety research in the National Center for Environmental Research (NCER). Liaison to the National Program Director for the Chemical Safety for Sustainability (CSS) National Research Program.

Crafting and editing of pesticide exposure and risk assessments (human and ecological). Served as Leader of Modeling Team, Office of Water, from 2004-2011. Supervised development of publicly available, open-source GIS-based (MapWindow) Decision Support System “BASINS4” (https://www.epa.gov/hydrowq/basins-download-and-installation) for analyzing & visualizing water quality data in a geospatial context, and providing a user-friendly front end that facilitates the setting up and running of popular pollutant fate/transport and effects models (HSPF, SWAT, SWMM, WASP, GWLF, AQUATOX).

Built mechanical model of a breathing infant to examine asphyxia-related Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) hazards to infants placed to sleep on various bedding materials. Results identified bedding types that pose high hazard potential. Analyzed toxic chemical content (organics, metals) of consumer products using GC/MS/FTIR, GC/MS, GC-FID, and ICP instrumentation.

Worked in academia (UNC-Chapel Hill) and private industry (various employers) as a laboratory biochemist and analytical chemist: conducted scanning calorimetry studies on thermal denaturation of proteins. Analyzed blood clotting enzymes using gel electrophoresis, activity assays, and HPLC. Analyzed organic chemicals (volatile and semivolatile) in environmental samples with GC/MS using custom target and EPA analytical methods: 500 series (drinking water), 600 series (waste water), SW-846 (solid waste), and CLP (superfund).
