Apprentice EditorValkhn Films / Victor Kanefsky Dec 1986 - Sep 1988What can I say? I landed here after college, not knowing what the hell I was doing or where I was going. I learned to synch dailies and sort of edit on a flatbed Steenbeck. I got real handy with some lost analogue skills like fast, one-handed films core winding (16 and 35), fast mag and pic sync block work, bin labelling and key code system designer for large and confusing doc editing situations. Once Victor put me in charge of the other interns and apprentices and, frankly, it was a disaster. I never liked bossing around my peers much. what the hell did I know? But i got to learn from some great editors like Sam Pollack (Spike Lee's editor) and other really talented, smart people. But I was a kid without a clue...typical really. It was another time and a different film business and different New York. Times Square, where our office was, was still the drug and porn capitol of America. Hollywood went on strike from New York City production and all that was left was weird hole in the wall doc work. Hell, I even assisted David O'Russel on one of his first short films. That was fun and he was pretty cool. All in all, it was my start. Then I moved on. Thanks Valkhn!
