I have worked in technology groups for Financial Services firms my whole career. I am passionate about technology and the social side of teams and organizations.Over the course of my career, I have developed the following talents:• I have a relentless focus on the customer. When I am leading a team, the first thing I do is identify what customer need we are satisfying. This empowers the members of the team to make their own decisions and gives context to the broader team when making priority and scoping decisions, all enabling the team to move quickly in the right direction.• I get things done. I have opened offices in multiple locations, hired and grown technical teams there. I genuinely care about the people I work with and I want them to succeed. I provide regular, honest feedback. I spend time with people, working with them to identify a path to grow. For some, it may be training, sometimes technical, sometime pure leadership. For others, it may be working on a project with a particular set of constraints, that allows them to explore new learnings in a safe environment.• I know how to work in a regulated environment. I know how to foster innovation and move quickly in a highly regulated industry. I seek to understand the actual regulation instead of the organization’s reaction to the regulation.     I leveraged my hands-on technical abilities and my operational and process expertise as I worked with multiple groups in the organization to either solve a known problem or identify the problem and solve it. I have been a mentor to members of both technology and business operations within the organization.Organizational improvements I have led:- One of our business units was struggling. The operations team supported only a couple of clients, but required too many people to meet their daily deliverables and the development team felt they weren’t getting good requirements and their application enhancements were either not used or did not help the operations team. I met with both teams and identified an immediate application change that could save roughly 50% of the operations team’s time, then worked with the development team to deliver it. I then identified a long term strategy for continuing to improve the capabilities of the technology platform. This group now supports significantly more clients and continues to grow.- One client had a very tight schedule that required daily heroics from our operations and accounting teams to meet. I met with the teams and set up a daily kata, which the teams used to implement small changes day over day to create a more predictable, manageable process.- One project had been going on for a while and the application the team had built could not handle the load from the initial client. The development and IT teams were pointing fingers at each other as to who was at fault. I met with the the teams and identified a few key architectural flaws with the application. I restructured the development team so they could address the flaws and the application now supports all of our clients.

    At HedgeServ, we are redefining the fund administration space. It has been a challenge and a pleasure participating in the growth of our company. My role is in taking technical and organizational theories and helping our company to apply them for individual fulfillment and company growth and success.Carrying on from my success with agile in the past, I worked with leaders from the different technology teams to create an environment that encouraged agile practices such as pair programming, test driven development, customer collaboration, and continuous improvement. Dictating the practices would not have worked. We needed the team to define their own. As a group we defined our values and principles, then experimented with our practices. In my role as CTO, I created an environment to support this experimentation and helped the team to evolve their practices.

    I initiated and led an Agile transformation that changed the technology organization from a chaotic group of people using yelling and threats to get things done to a disciplined group that worked together.I am a firm believer in showing rather than telling. I leveraged the chaos in the organization to form a small team and implemented practices to help us solve a significant scalability issue with the firm's back office system. We implemented daily stand-ups, tdd, on-site customer, and acceptance tests. Each person on the team had their responsibility. We solved this problem in 4 months, successfully converting the backend database and deploying the new application with zero issues. The CEO of the firm noticed this and asked me to do the same with other teams. I brought in trainers to help me and we converted the organization to working in small iterations, with full transparency and heightened communication between the technology and business teams.Not all teams at IFS embraced the new practices I proposed. It was here that I learned that different solutions can be effective in different situations.

    While aluminium.com is one of the many web sites that failed during the (first?) .com boom, and I didn't come away with monetary riches, I did not come away empty handed. It was during this period that I learned about Extreme Programming. Forced to abandon the heavy process brought to us by the consulting group we had contracted with, I worked with my small team to apply the XP principles and practices.I remember two distinct stories from that period that hooked me on the power that XP represented at the time and started me on my journey of learning about organizations.The first experience came with our first planning session using the new process. I will never forget when I presented our business group with a stack of cards and they happily grouped them and prioritized them so that we knew what to work on first.My second experience was an evening coding session with someone more junior than myself. A bug had just come in that was marked as *urgent*. A user could not complete a transaction on the site. My pair and I reviewed the issue and I immediately started re-designing the class hierarchy to account for this new change. I was prepared for a late night and a lot of code changes when my partner pointed out a simple, one-line solution to the problem. He saved us both many hours and unnecessary coding. Whenever anyone talks about pairing requiring two senior people, I think of this moment.
