Sr. Mgr Of User Interface Design (Human Factors Engr.)Gateway 1998 - 2004Irvine, Ca, UsManaged nine human factors engineers, across three sites, to ensure an excellent user experience across all Gateway products. Worked with other groups in Gateway to design software and hardware user interfaces for all computer products (e.g. notebooks, PCs, memory sticks, routers, speakers) and all consumer electronics (TVs, Connected Media Servers, DVD Recorders, Digital Cameras, MP3 Players, and PVRs).Key Achievements:• My group designed/developed software and hardware user interfaces for all Gateway computer products (notebooks, memory sticks, routers/APs) and consumer electronics (TVs, Connected Media Servers, DVD Recorders, Digital Cameras, MP3 Players and PVRs).• Designed, developed and maintained the “Do More with Gateway” application, a downloaded software application that enhanced the user experience by providing easy access to tutorial videos, manuals and links to needed items (like printer ink), generating $360,000 in revenue annually.• Implemented 100% color-coding on all computer ports and items that plugged into those ports. Collaboration across multiple organizations. Following our lead, Microsoft later required color-coding on all PCs throughout the industry, adopting most of our color codes. • Worked on a cross-functional team to develop Gateway’s first tool-less cases for easy access, upgradability, manufacturability and “accessorization,” which cut manufacturing time by two thirds and repair time by half, decreasing a four-person build cell to a two-person cell.• Saved more than $5 million annually in materials and shipping costs by redesigning packaging for the accessories box on three computer platforms.• Developed and tested a more pictorial setup poster to enhance usability and reduce localization costs. • Developed and established a longitudinal follow-me-home study on the low-cost Gateway PC to ensure that the user experience was flawless, avoiding expensive technical support calls on this low-margin product. -
Sr. Human Factors EngineerGateway 1997 - 1998Irvine, Ca, UsTroubleshot issues with shipping and upcoming products. Helped design and evaluate the HelpSpot!, an online help, learning aid and diagnostic tool.
