In 1993 I formed my own company. Hamwic Engineering Limited which was an electro mechanical design and manufacture company. The company started as a one man band and grew to employ five full time staff and as occasion demanded also employed contract staff to assist at times of high work load. The company's principal activities was the design and manufacture of: small machines, nuclear decommissioning tools, machine control equipment, remote inspection equipment and remote operated vehicles.The company eventually reduced to single consultant status as a result of the Government decision to close the Magnox power stations (our principal customer) combined with a UK recession during which our commercial customers either relocating abroad or ceasing to trade.

Novermber 2016 - PresentPerforming engineering decommissioning studies for nuclear sites.2015 to July 2016 – Engineering assessment of various items of safety related equipment and the production of Engineering Design Substantiation reports to underpin the PRS2 safety case.2007 – 2015 Engineering Manager – Responsible for leading the engineering of high integrity mechanical handling equipment used for lifting and transfer of explosives and nuclear material and to deliver the project whilst working within a Quality Assured and Regulated Nuclear / Defence Industry system.2006 - 2007 Engineering Manager - Decommissioning Project. Responsibilities included review and approval of safety case documentation, review and approval of contractor’s method statements and to take an overview of the decommissioning project methodologies and develop decommissioning strategies.2004 - 2005 Project Manager – Project Management of Decommissioning Plans

Gravatom Projects was a project engineering company operating in the nuclear and defence sectors. I reported to the Technical Director and I was responsible for the technical control of 5 Engineers plus other staff who were time to time allocated to me.The principal activity of the section was the design and development decommissioning tools and methods.

Cable accessories are the special joints or terminations used on high voltage power cables. My responsibility was to provide mechanical stress analysis assistance to the department drawing office.

1983 – 1986 Southampton UniversityFull Time Student Between 1983 and 1986 I studied mechanical engineering as a full time mature student at Southampton University and obtained a BSc. Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

In 1980 I joined Vosper Thornycroft Shipbuilders and after a brief spell working as a fitter joined the drawing office as a Mechanical Design Draughtsman. I remained in this position until 1983, during this time I studied a day release course for two years at Southampton Institute of Higher Education and obtained an HNC (Analytical) Mechanical Engineering.

1977 – 1980 Various Mechanical Technician Three years working in various technician level engineering positions including – Toolmaking, Diesel Fitter, Plant Fitter and Mechanical Inspector.

I began my engineering career in 1972 when I started a four year marine engineering apprenticeship in the Merchant Navy. During this time I obtained a C&G Technicians and Technicians Higher Certificates in Marine Engineering.On completion of my apprenticeship I served a further year as a seagoing engineering officer.
