About Jim Roach
I have enjoyed many years in engineering, having started my journey by teaching at the University of Colorado. I had the privilege of working at the Solar Energy Research Institute (now the National Renewable Energy Laboratory) in Golden, Colorado, followed by many years at UTC-Pratt & Whitney working in the field of composites and advanced technologies. I have had the good fortune to perform as a Designer, a Structural Analyst, in a variety of Lead roles (exercising both technical and Project skills) and have had the honour of advancing the state of the art in composite material system design and analysis for many jet engine components over many engine programs (both commercial and military).I am continuing my educational journey by pursuing a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Connecticut. In addition, I am also the Technical Content Owner and Instructor for four Engineering Technical University courses: (1) Composite Design I - Introduction (2) Composite Design II - Best Practices (3) Composite Design III - Mechanics and (4) Composite Design IV - Testing
Listed skills include Composites, Finite Element Analysis, Aerospace, Structural Analysis, and 41 others.

Composite Structures And Methods Disciplines Senior Manager
CurrentThis role further expands my responsibilities to cover Methods development.
Composite Structures Discipline Senior Manager
This is an expanded version of my previous Structures Integrator role. In addition to providing technical leadership and guidance, I am now performing as a Senior Manager.
Composite Structures Integrator
I am responsible for providing engineering guidance, leadership and mentorship regarding structural analysis and design of composite material systems to a dynamic team of highly-proficient practitioners and leaders in the field. I am also the content owner and instructor for the Composite Design courses taught within the company.
Externals Structures Lead
This position, resulting from a company reorganization, allows me to leverage my skills obtained as a Structures Integrator, as well as those obtained as a composite discipline lead, while gaining experience with a new assortment of components.
Next Generation Product Family Structures Lead
This position, resulting from a company reorganization, allows me to work on our next generation Geared Turbofan. This remarkable piece of equipment has proven to be highly competitive in the marketplace. In this role, I am continuing my responsibilities as a Structures Integrator, although the position no longer officially exists. I continue to lead structures, primarily for the static components (cases, frames, stators, and so forth) and am able to leverage the skills that I obtained both at a Composite Discipline Lead and as a Structures Integrator. I am supporting two different Component Integrated Product Teams for both metallic and composite parts.
Structures Integrator
Essentially the voice for the Structures Discipline in the Component Integrated Product Team, this role was a Structures Lead and more, I had the opportunity to address both in-house and issues in the field. I was responsible for all of the cold section parts for several engine programs, acting as the liaison between the various Part Families who performed the daily structural analysis and the Program Office Principle Chief Engineers (integrating the needs of both, as the title implies). I worked directly with the CIPT Leader on a daily basis, ensuring that the team worked smoothly and effectively as items pertained to Structures. A key benefit in the position was that I was able to interact with our Chiefs and Fellows frequently, allowing me to learn from their expertise in a wide spectrum of areas. In addition, I had the honour of working directly with our customer.I also had the opportunity to develop new analytical methods in addition to our established engineering standard work.Although I greatly enjoyed this role, the company performed a reorganization that, unfortunately, eliminated this position. I was highly rated in this position, and was in high demand for my subsequent role, starting on January 1st, 2016.
Technical Integrated Product Team Lead
In addition to performing as a Composite Structures Discipline Lead, I have the honor of leading the efforts for eight different Integrated Product Teams (IPTs):1) Composite Nosecone2) Composite Frame3) Composite Variable Vane4) Metallic Variable Vane5) Composite Stator6) Metallic Stator7) Composite Stator Fairing8) Metallic Stator FairingEach of the teams includes several engineers of various disciplines (Project, Design, Structures, Aerodynamicists, Heat Transfer specialists).
Composite Structures Discipline Lead
As a Composite Structures Discipline Lead, I perform the following duties:° Provide technical expertise, analysis and consultation for composite structural analysis and design° Mentor practitioners and work with composites part families, core structures, materials, methods groups and structures chiefs to develop new techniques and pursue advances in composite structural tools, predictive capability and testing capability° Develop tools and processes used for the design and analysis of complex composite jet engine parts, included in Engineering Standard WorkIn addition to the above, the following items are notable:1) I am rated at a Level 4 Structures Proficiency (total of four levels, highest is 4)2) Achieving Competitive Excellence Engineering Level C (Lowest is A, Highest is D)3) Alternate / Advanced Material System Activities– Major contributor toward implementation of advanced materials-based technology incorporated into production parts, yielding savings in excess of $10k per engine– Managed static and dynamic (impact) material test plans– Supported stage-gate reviews ensuring candidate material production readiness– Visited vendors intended to support project needs– Performed large deflection elastic-plastic analyses for components utilizing new materials– Coordinated analyses, both in-house and outsourced, supporting component designs– Developed design and structural analysis standard work documents outlining concept initiation, optimization, and detailed design of components utilizing advanced material systems4) Structures Lead supporting composite activities pertaining to the Geared Turbofan (GTF) engine5) Significant contributions to company Intellectual Property protection.
