Conducting research on visual performance in athletes and also studying diseased populations (e.g. diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration). Most of my work involves nutritional factors that can significantly improve visual performance and ocular health.

I teach optometrists, ophthalmologists, and retina specialists about the relevance of visual function testing to the diagnosis of age-related macular degeneration. Because we can now detect AMD 3-5 years earlier, lifestyle and nutritional intervention is the key to slowing (or perhaps stopping) the progression of this pernicious disease. Given my background in nutrition and vision, I also offer advice to doctors regarding the positive benefits of dietary modification and nutritional supplements for eye health.

Conducted several experiments and clinical trials regarding the effects of macular carotenoid (lutein, zeaxanthin, and mesozeaxanthin) supplementation on visual performance, systemic inflammation, cortisol, neurotrophic factors such as BDNF, and cognitive performance. Classes taught included Sensation and Perception, Cognitive Psychology, Comparative Physiology, and Biological Foundations of Health.

Conducted numerous experiments on visual performance, field testing of lasers, and effects of nutritional status on vision.
