Jim Thorpe Work Experience Details
  • Self-Employed
Electronics, Rf And Semiconductor Device Engineering Consultant
    Self-Employed Jan 2012 - Present
    Burley-In-Wharfedale - United Kingdom │ Munich - Germany
When not working for Experior, I supply Electronics, RF/Microwave and Semiconductor Engineering consultancy services to clients in the UK, EU and beyond on a contractual basis. Much of my work is remote / design related, however, I am happy to undertake on-site lab and clean-room based activities when required. Project management is also a key part of my offering to clients to ensure that the projects I am involved with are delivered within budget and on-time.
  • Experior Micro Technologies
    Technology Lead
Experior Micro Technologies Jan 2012 - Present
    Burley-In-Wharfedale - United Kingdom │ Munich - Germany
When not providing consultancy services to clients directly, I work at Experior Microtech where I collaborate with other engineers, technologists and manufacturers from my network to deliver electronics and software solutions as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Through Experior I have worked on electronics and software solutions for use in a wide range of applications, including smart buildings, environmental monitoring, water management, indoor farming and the Internet-of-Things.
  • Ums - United Monolithic Semiconductors
Development Lead - Gan Hemt Technologies
Ums - United Monolithic Semiconductors Jan 2005 - Nov 2012
    Ulm Area, Germany
At UMS I was a member of the Technology Research and Development group where I had the responsibility of leading the 0.5µm Gallium Nitride HEMT RF power transistor technology development. This involved many aspects of III-V technology development, and industrialisation, from epitaxial material specification, through to transistor, passive element and chip design, clean-room process management, packaging, test-plan definition, SPC implementation, process capability assessment and device reliability evaluation. Other responsibilities included project management, supplier interfacing, customer support and the promotion of technical exchange between UMS and its strategic partners. This resulted in the first industrially qualified RF GaN HEMT technology in Europe.
  • Filtronic Broadband
    Higher Senior Engineer
    Filtronic Broadband Feb 2002 - Jan 2005
    Newton Aycliffe - United Kingdom
At Filtronic I was part of a small team responsible for the development, qualification and manufacturing ramp-up of Ku-Band point-to-point transceiver modules for mobile back-haul applications. A key aspect of this work was the utilisation of GaAs pHEMT MMIC technologies from Filtronic's Newton Aycliffe foundry. The work resulted in successful product qualification and subsequent volume production and supply to OEM customers from Filtronic's RF-module production line.
  • University Of Leeds
Research Fellow (Institute Of Microwaves & Photonics)
University Of Leeds Apr 2000 - Jan 2002
In this 12-month contract I was responsible for the development, fabrication and test of micromachined resonant cavities for use in millimeter-wave klystrons. Working in collaboration with the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory my activities involved electromagnetic simulation, circuit design, lithography, thin / thick film processing, wet and dry etching, Cu and Au electroplating and RF measurement of fabricated devices to 100GHz.
  • Istituto Eletrotechnico G.Ferraris (Turin)
    Visiting Scientist (Mm-Wave Receivers Group)
    Istituto Eletrotechnico G.Ferraris (Turin) Mar 1998 - Feb 2000
    Turin Area, Italy
During this period working in northern Italy I was responsible for the design, fabrication and test of heterodyne receivers using superconducting films for radio-astronomy applications at 245GHz. This involved the design and manufacture of log-periodic antenna structures and their chip-level integration with SIS junctions. The resulting devices were integrated with a cryogenically cooled quasi-optical measurement system that was subsequently used for mm-Wave observations at the MITO Millimetre and Infrared Testa-Grigia Telescope in the French-Italian Alps.
  • The University Of Sheffield
    Semiconductor Process Engineer
The University Of Sheffield Mar 1997 - Feb 1998
    Sheffield, United Kingdom
After completing my Ph.D. studies I undertook a 1-year contract at the University of Sheffield fabricating Gallium Arsenide laser diodes. This involved contact optical lithography, thin-film processing, dry-etching, annealing, die separation, bonding and test. The resulting structures were used to assess the performance of novel MBE-grown heterostructures with light-emitting properties.
  • Rolls-Royce
    Electrical Engineering Apprentice.
    Rolls-Royce Jun 1988 - May 1992
    Derby, United Kingdom
Prior to my academic studies I completed a 4-year EITB certified electrical and electronics engineering apprenticeship in the Marine Power Operations Group at Rolls Royce in Derby. This was a broad training program based within the zero-energy reactor group covering many aspects of sensing, control and reliability engineering.
