The mission of the March of Dimes, founded by President Franklin Delano Roosvelt in 1938, is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. This is carried out through research, community services, education and advocacy to save babies' lives. March of Dimes researchers, volunteers, educators, outreach workers and advocates work together to give all babies a fighting chance against the threats to their health: prematurity, birth defects, and low birthweight.The Rhode Island Chapter works hand-in-hand with the state's health care, insurance, academic, and business communities to promote and provide -- among other things -- awareness, prevention, research, NICU support, and newborn screening. The year's capstone fundraising event, the March for Babies, is held every spring. This year's will be on Sunday, April 25, at Colt State Park in Bristol, R.I.
