About Jim Been
Jim Been (10/24/1987, Amsterdam) is an Associate Professor at the Department of Economics of Leiden University. His research interest is applying econometrics to aging issues in general and the well-being of (future) retirees in specific.Jim was listed in the Top 100 Best Young Professionals 2015 as one of few academics. In 2014, he was a visiting researcher at the RAND Center for the Study of Aging at RAND Corp., Santa Monica, CA. He has been affiliated as a Netspar Junior Research Fellow, Fellow of the UBS International Center of Economics in Society and Ambassador of the prestigious Leiden Convention Bureau of the City of Leiden since 2014.Jim wrote his Ph.D. thesis in Economics titled "Pensions, Retirement, and the Financial Position of the Elderly" (Netspar Best Ph.D. Thesis Award 2015) at the Department of Economics, Leiden University. Simultaneously, he assisted in evidence-based policymaking regarding pensions at the Dutch Socio-Economic Council (SER), CPB Netherlands Bureau for Economics Policy Analysis and OECD during the Ph.D.As a Ph.D. student, Jim received formal education at the Tinbergen Institute (TI) Graduate Schoolspecializing in Labor Economics and Applied Microeconometrics (29 ECTS). Also, he was invited toparticipate in the highly competitive 16th IZA European Summer School in Labor Economics, 2014RAND Summer Institute and 5th Lindau Nobel Laureates Meeting on Economic Sciences. Scholarships had been received to attend these meetings.Prior to the Ph.D., Jim did research at the CPB Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis and was a research-assistant at the Department of Spatial Economics at the VU University Amsterdam, while doing his M.Sc. in Economics (cum laude - VU University Amsterdam, 2010). He had a similar research position at the Netherlands Ministry of Economic Affairs while completing his B.Sc. in Economics (cum laude - VU, 2009) and the VU Honors Program (cum laude - VU, 2009).
