Oversaw a portfolio of Federal education policy issues for special populations. Duties included:Developed policy for Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) flexibility, an initiative that grants waivers of key provisions of the ESEA in exchange for State-led designed reforms in standards and assessments, school accountability and teacher and principal evaluation systems. Oversaw education systems for 12 States under ESEA flexibility. Advised the Assistant Secretary and Secretary of Education on all matters related to ESEA flexibility.Lead legislative language development and issues research.Provided technical assistance to senior Congressional staff on legislative proposals.Developed and maintained relationships with State educational agency staff, Chief State School Officers, national experts in the areas of English Learners, children with disabilities, homeless students and children in foster care.Delivered remarks and speeches at national events on topics of K-12 education policy and Obama Administration priorities for education reform.

The National Youth Employment Coalition (NYEC) is a national membership network that improves the effectiveness of organizations that seek to help youth become productive citizens. Toward this end, NYEC sets and promotes quality standards; tracks, crafts and influences policy; provides and supports professional development; and builds the capacity of organizations and programs.Managed a $5 million dollar three-year national pilot funded by the Gates Foundation and the Nellie Mae Education Foundation. Oversaw selection and management of eight partnerships comprised of community based organizations and community colleges that deliver a program to ensure youth dropouts obtain a college credential. Awards include three-year sub-grant amounts ranging from $450,000 to $600,000 each.

College Summit provides districts with a strategy and tools to transform college enrollment throughout the district. Equipping students, teachers, counselors, principals and administrators alike, College Summit builds the capacity of schools to send more students to post-secondary education. Revived the Southern California regional office. Secured the first two school district partnerships, in contracts amounting $500,000. Hired, trained and managed staff to create a college going culture in schools. Built a two-year regional operations plan to guide implementation and sales. Total increase of students served: 1,500. Recognized as only region serving all seniors in its districts.Founded the Program Management department, an internal technical assistance team within the organization. Built systems for partnership development and staff training to support 100% growth for each of three years, including community needs assessment, site operations plan and training modules.

The Minority Training Program in Cancer Control Research (MTPCCR) is designed to encourage minority students to pursue doctoral programs that focus on cancer research.Managed national competitive application process and reconciled annual budget of $100,000 for a program that yielded statistically significant increase the number of minority PhD researchers. Published peer reviewed article in the Journal of Cancer Education on the replication of an education training program for first-generation ethnic minority students seeking PhDs.

The Transfer, Re-entry, and Student Parent Center serves a diverse population of students and is dedicated to providing programs and services in support of the academic and personal success of transfer, re-entry, and student parents. Conceptualized first-ever course for academic credit on graduate school admission for first-generation students with children. Built curriculum, set lesson plans, instructed students and evaluated their progress, provided student grades and reported course evaluations to the university academic division.Guided 50 first-generation, low-income students through the graduate admissions process. All students received admission into one of their top three choices.

Recruiter of over 1000 campers for 10 week-long summer camp sessions.Developed programs for camp sessions covering academic counseling and personal growth.

The member's legislative priorities include health care, senior services, early childhood education, environmental health, jobs and economic development. During her six years in the Assembly, she passed more than 70 bills and resolutions.Lead activities for the 'Adopt A School - Partnership for Success' linking civic groups, businesses, unions, neighborhood and service groups with local public schools. More than a dozen businesses, colleges, health providers and neighborhood group have signed on. Recruited more than 1000 volunteers to spruce up childcare centers in Oakland and Alameda for annual events. Executed a healthy eating seminar with local chefs who demonstrated menu creation and cooking to over 200 participants.

Peace Corps Volunteers serve in 74 countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Central and South America, Europe, and the Middle East. Collaborating with local community members, Volunteers work in areas like education, youth outreach and community development, the environment, and information technology.Designed curriculum and set lesson plans for English, Health, Life Skills and Computing at the secondary level using a variety of techniques from a literature review, in-person interviews and site visits to identify best practices. 20% more students school-wide passed national exams in English. Secured $US 10,000 to fund a school infrastructure improvement project to eliminate need for school closures due to flooding.
