In this position as Senior Technical Writer, I am using my 25+ years of practical, technical experience to update critical service documentation and document APIs. Customers really need these maintenance and installation guides, and they must be correct!. Their livelihoods depend on them. Literally, they can't wait!I have delivered eighteen (18) 200+ page manuals for the Magnum V Test System, the latest generation in automatic test equipment (ATE) for flash memory. These were all 50+% new content. These memory chips are tested today and in your cell phones tomorrow. I have also documented APIs for the Magnum iCP5 Test System, a system that tests the image capturing capabilities of CMOS Image Sensors (CIS) and updated the maintenance software instructions in the service manuals for legacy test systems.

In this position as Senior Technical Writer, I used my 4+ years of experience with DITA and XML and his vast technical expertise to convert complex Catalyst (Enterprise-level network switch) legacy content to single-source, highly reusable, and more understandable documentation with at least 50% improved readability and 75% improved manageability. I worked closely with subject matter experts, management, and marketing to prioritize my work in line with customer need. Source content is shared across four different Catalyst switch platforms using feature IDs that conditonalize the content differences between the platforms.

Additionally, Jim updated the WebLogic Process Integrator (WLPI) and the WebLogic XML Translator (WLXT) Installation and Configuration Guides for the InstallAnywhere Java installer. He also designed and created the BEA eLink Business Process Option User Guide, including developing and programming sample processes. Jim supervised another writer during the creation of a process-control application documentation set. Other updates included the BEA eLink Adapter for the R/3 ALE User Guide (50% more descriptions to configuration sections to make the User Guide more usable), the Tuxedo Smart Plug-in for HP OpenView Release Notes to reflect porting of HP OpenView and the Plug-in to Windows NT (resulted in opening up the Windows NT market for this software). Jim also designed and created the BEA eLink Adapter for R/3 ALE IDOC Loader User Guide. The IDOC Loader automates the configuration of an IDOC for data conversion. IDOCs are SAP's data-conversion format. While at the firm, Jim also took WebLogic Server Administration and Java Programming courses.

During his tenure, Jim designed and created a proprietary C++ compiler guide and a data integration guide for internal application developers, including programming the example code. He substantially rewrote database installation and administration guides for seven platforms based on customer usability studies, developer interviews, and good writing techniques. He also added new content to the PeopleSoft Hardware and Software Requirements Guides, created a Lotus Notes database to track documentation problems, and took courses in PepperCode (C++ based), PeopleTools, and Data Management Tools. During his tenure, the firm experienced approximately a 50% reduction in technical support calls.

In one of his most hardware oriented assignments as a Senior Technical Writer, Jim converted a hundred-page command reference to Windows Help in the first day using his customized version of Doc-To-Help. He gathered most of the information for these instructions directly from the application that controls the Genus 7000 Cluster Tool, a modularized Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) system. The rest, he obtained from the software & hardware engineers.

As Senior Technical Writer for his own technical writing firm, Jim produced a broad and versatile range of documentation, everything from a 70-page employee manual to a 100-page user manual for circuit design automation software.
