Billing Manager
The Billing Manager supervises a staff of seven Billing Associates. It is a position that requires great attention to detail and the ability to concentrate in an active environment. This position is responsible for the overall service billing operations at Horizon Bradco, and requires good organization and interpersonal skills. This enabled us to convert a traditional newspaper expense operation into a profit center. The result was a competitive distribution operation that could be marketed to develop new revenue sources.• Teamed with our Vice President of Production to design a production consolidation plan that reduced the number of individual newspaper print sites. This initiative resulted in annual cost savings to the company of over $770,000.

I reported directly to the Vice President of Newspaper Publishing. I was responsible for all newspaper operations including financial, advertising, circulation, marketing, and production. I had direct supervision of 185 employees including five senior level managers.Accomplishments:• Developed and implemented aggressive cost control programs in April 1994 that reduced newspaper’s total operating expenses which were 17.6% ahead of the previous year. Our final financial results for 1994 saw our profit margin grow three percentage points because we successfully managed total expenses to a 3.6% growth rate.• Redesigned the television book publication to increase revenues and reduce costs. Prior to the redesign, this product was projected to lose $180,000 in 1994. Instead, the redesign helped this product reach a break-even point by September.

I was responsible for all newspaper financial operations; business office functions; M.I.S functions; production operations including composing, press, mailroom, and inserting; security operations; plant facilities management; chairman of safety committee; coordinated and wrote newspaper's annual marketing plan; direct supervision of 210 employees including seven senior level managers.Accomplishments:• Reduced bad debt write offs by 32% in one year, from $1.9 million to $617,000, through development and implementation of strict credit policies and improved client communications. • Improved production and distribution "on time efficiency" from 29% in 1991 to 96% in 1992 and 98% in 1993.• Designed and implemented a comprehensive purchasing and accounts payable system.• Part of a leadership team that researched, planned, developed, and successfully implemented the change of the newspaper's name from The Bridgeport Post to Connecticut Post.• Instrumental in the planning and implementation of an audiotext voice information service, alternate delivery service, single sheet flyer program, commercial printing operation, and TMC product, all resulting in incremental revenue and profit growth for the company.• Appointed interim publisher of The Evening Sentinel in Ansonia, CT and managed operations until publication was absorbed by Connecticut Post in 1992.
