It's rare to be apart of a company that has pioneered the category it operates in. When Conversica was first launched in 2007, there was no Siri, no Alexa, no Cortana, no AI assistants in general. But then Conversica developed AVA (the company's first AI persona at the time). Over a decade later Conversica is changing the way the world does business.Conversica pioneered the category of Revenue Digital Agents for accelerating revenue, helping organizations attract, acquire, and grow customers. First launched in 2009, the flagship Conversica® Sales AI Assistant has over a decade of expertise helping companies find and secure customers more quickly and efficiently by autonomously contacting, engaging, qualifying and following up with leads via powerfully human, two-way conversations. Now Conversica has assistants for marketing, sales, and customer success organizations - all focused on increasing revenue.Reaching over 1B interactions on behalf of thousands of companies, Conversica’s AI Agents are built on a proven and patented conversational AI platform integrating natural language understanding (NLU), decision and policy management, natural language generation (NLG), autonomous action chains and deep learning capabilities that engage prospects over multiple communication channels and in multiple languages. We deployed the first transformer GenAI model in 2019.Conversica was founded in 2007 and is headquartered in Foster City in Silicon Valley with additional offices in Seattle, Bellingham, Guadalajara, & Manila. Conversica is a portfolio company of Providence Equity, Savant Growth, Toba Capital, and Hollyport Capital.

Operating Executive

Menlo Park, Ca, Us

In this role I helped the Highbar team assess new investment opportunities and, of course, corresponding CEO roles. HighBar Partners is a private investment firm focused on strategic growth capital investments in enterprise and infrastructure software companies. The firm invests in companies undergoing significant change or transition and provides patient, long-term capital to build successful businesses. HighBar is a creative and engaged partner with resources and relationships to assist management teams with financial, strategic and operational execution. HighBar’s principals have founded, operated or invested in over 100 companies in the technology sector. Also, the “BAR” in HighBAR used to stand for the three founding members - Bill Joy, Andy Bechtolsheim, & Roy Thiele-Sardiña, who are all legacies in their own right.Bill designed & wrote Berkeley UNIX, & then co-founded Sun with Vinod Khosla, Scott McNealy, & Andy Bechtolsheim. Andy invented the “Stanford University Network workstation" that eventually became the Sun-1 Workstation. Roy started the Sun's telco business & grew it to 10% of the company's worldwide revenue, before he led all international sales. All three went on to accomplish amazing things beyond their Sun success (not that this wasn’t enough). When Bill Joy wrote his own high performance TCP/IP stack, others who failed before him asked, “How did you do this?” His response, “It's very simple — you read the protocol & write the code.” I love Bill’s “no bullshit” & “just get it done” brilliance. Andy wrote the initial $100K check to "Google Inc" prior to the company even being founded. You have to love his passion for startup innovation. Roy, like his peers, started as an engineer, but “jumped to the dark side” to become a master of sales & then later a founder & CEO. Roy’s connections are unmatched, & his ability to recall a day, an hour, a minute of detail out of his past is not human.

Customer Identity & Access Management (CIAM) was a $16.4B market in 2018 with a 19.25% CAGR, growing to $56B by 2025. The company invented social login, & co-founded the OpenID Foundation (the steward of leading protocols for authentication). Janrain managed customers identities throughout their life cycle - starting as an unknown user, to a registered & known user, to a highly active & high-lifetime value user. We do this by offering authentication & authorization services which power traditional/social registration & login, & single-sign-on with a real-time system of record for a unified customer ID within its Cloud Directory.Since 2000, the number of connected people has grown well over 8x, with 3.3B out of 7.2B people globally, accessing their digital worlds. Vp & Gm, Americas Digital Applications Solutions

Ashburn, Virginia, Us

I led a newly formed practice at CSC (later merged with HPE to form DXC) focused on Digital Applications (Digital Transformation). I ran a line of business of 7000 responsible for $1B in commercial business; including both consulting and delivery organizations; focused on serving Fortune 1000 companies in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Argentina, and Brazil; including Banking/Capital Markets ($50M), Consumer/Retail ($150M), Energy/Tech ($125M), Healthcare/Lifesciences ($165M), Insurance ($245M), Manufacturing ($265M). I reported directly to CSC's EVP of Americas, David Zolet. To stay ahead, enterprises need agile, dynamic, iterative, continuously evolving, ecosystem-based application environments. In the digital economy, businesses will live or die based on how they handle complex application strategies, including the use of data and analytics, cloud, cyber, and mobility to expand packaged applications, and/or develop custom applications which improve internal operations and external customer experiences. All of these application environments need to deliver one thing - a seamless digital user experience. The key challenge for today’s applications professional is to reinvent applications strategies to align with the new digital reality, while at the same time supporting the innovation businesses will need to remain competitive. This practice included innovations from traditional technology powerhouses including SAP, Oracle, Microsoft, and IBM, as well as new high-growth cloud application providers including Salesforce, Workday, and ServiceNow. We deployed advanced DevOps capabilities for clients, convert them into agile enterprises, and educate them on their application portfolio journey from current to future state, beginning with application rationalization.

Digital voice and data communication technologies was something I became very curious about. I worked on a product line with other other crazy smart engineers (e.g. Manley Klassen). Sep 1986 - Jun 1988

Electrical Engineer

Bethesda, Md, Us

Hungry for something "bleeding edge", I worked on a top secret government project, funded by the Army, to develop a laser satellite defense system. For more than 30 years, a significant focus of the government’s defense science and technology program has been on the development of lasers with the power and wavefront, or beam quality, needed for eventual “beam weapons” applications. My project consisted of a curtain of X-ray lasers. The curtain was to be deployed either using a series of missiles launched from submarines or via satellites, during the critical seconds following an attack on the US. The satellites would be powered by built-in nuclear warheads – in theory, the energy from the warhead detonation would be used to pump a series of laser emitters in the missiles or satellites, allowing each satellite to shoot down many incoming warheads simultaneously. The attraction of this approach was that it was thought to be faster than an optical laser, which could only shoot down warheads one at a time, limiting the number of warheads each laser could destroy in the short time 'window' of an attack. I also worked on optical laser approach with large satellite-based mirror used to reflect ground-based laser system to shoot down warheads. This was all during the period of GEODSS (Ground Based-Electro-Optical Deep Space Surveillance) and GBFELTIE (Ground Based Free Electron Laser Technology Integration Experiment).
