    Working with his engineering team, Jim innovated two [early] virtualization products and a business technology software tool. In addition Jim managed the Performance Engineering Group at Zitel for the final year of his tenure with the company. The team's first virtualization innovation was an IBM mainframe VSAM co-processor known as the Logical Record Server [LRS]. Intercepting application calls from MVS, the server stored frequently accessed [VSAM] records on solid state memory in much the same way as today's solid state disks. This scheme greatly reduced application-processing costs and improved performance without CPU upgrades. The second virtualization product was conceived in 1994, and earned the team the Best New Product of the Year award by the DEC Professional magazine. Jim's third innovation was a software tool called the Value Analysis Method, which allowed customers to deploy optimum system architectures by evaluating vendor neutral cost-benefit ROI analyses of various alternative configurations for TPC-B and TPC-C workloads.

The GE design-win was in part attributable to Jim's creative negotiation with a major Japanese DRAM vendor during a DRAM shortage, of a “futures contract’ that enabled my company to procure DRAM chips at a time when customers could not. His projects also included various electronic and signal intelligence projects for the P-3 Orion, the F-15E fighter, the Miles Tornado, the B-52 bomber and highly classified projects such as Ashtoreth, Project 1365, Vestage "B" and the EC-135. As a public service during this period, Jim developed and marketed the technology investment strategy game Technopoly [TM] with the purpose of interesting middle school students in computer architecture and the finance and investment side of IT.
