Managed the staff counsel serving the Standing Committee on Legal Ethics. Investigated complaints alleging unauthorized Practice of Law. Drafted advisory opinions for the Standing Committee and provided informal advice over the telephone to members of the bar, bench and general public on matters involving legal ethics, lawyer advertising and the unauthorized practice of law. Frequently lectures and publishes articles on matters relating to legal ethics and the unauthorized practice of law. Taught Professional Responsibility for 19 years at the T.C. Williams School of Law in Richmond, Virginia. From 2008-2011, served on the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Legal Ethics and Professionalism. Formerly, an Assistant Bar Counsel for the Virginia State Bar for six years, prosecuting cases of attorney misconduct before the District Committees, Disciplinary Board and Three-Judge Courts. Before his employment with the Virginia State Bar, Mr. McCauley was in private practice for seven years. Mr. McCauley graduated cum laude from James Madison University in 1978. He received his law degree from the T.C. Williams School of Law, University of Richmond, in 1982. Served as a member on the Virginia State Bar’s Mandatory Professionalism Course faculty from 2004-2010. Fellow of the Virginia Law and the American Bar Foundations. Member of the John Marshall Inn of Court in Richmond, Virginia. Appointed in 2013 by Chief Justice Kinser to serve on the Special Committee to Study Criminal Discovery Rules. Elected in 2014 to Board of Directors, Lawyers Helping Lawyers.
