When I graduated from law school, the idea that I would have a career in higher education as the conduct dean never crossed my mind. As fate and circumstance would have it, this role was not only tailor made for me, it also provided an authentic sense of purpose and mission that I doubt I would have ever found as a lawyer. Besides having my own 'colorful history' as an undergraduate, the role of assistant dean of students allowed me to to draw from my skills and experience as a lawyer, a teacher, a parent, and a counselor. It also didn't hurt that I had a background in customer service, public speaking and stand-up comedy. I feel lucky to have found a career with a sense of mission. I was fortunate to have worked with some truly remarkable and caring people and to have made a difference in the lives of my students. After 20 years in eduction and over 5,000 students, all good things must come to an end. I left St. Thomas in the summer of 2016 as a part of a well-timed and generous voluntary departure/retirement program. Since that time, and in spite of the pandemic, I have been lucky enough to travel with my wife, do some intermittent part-time work and volunteer.I continue to enjoy the freedom of retirement but I have found, especially with the pandemic, that I miss the energy that comes with the day-to-day interactions of a purposeful job. That is my motivation in seeking a position where I can maintain a positive work-life balance and provide an employer with a lifetime of skill and experience. As the chief judicial officer at the university, I was responsible for the oversight, maintenance and supervision of the university judicial system. I dealt with a large volume of student conduct issues and generally handled the more serious behavioral issues that would be resolved through the university hearing board process. Our judicial jurisdiction covered student behavior both on and off campus. This necessitated regular and productive interaction with members of the neighborhood and community, outside the physical boundaries of St. Thomas.I spent 10 years as a member of the West Summit Neighborhood Advisory Committee as Co-Chair of the Neighborhood and Student Relations Subcommittee. In this role I created a successful and award winning collaborative working relationship between students and neighbors.Other job responsibilities included regulatory compliance and acting as a designated trained responder for Title IX incidents involving sexual misconduct. I was a member of the University Action and Response Team, (UART) and I provided legal expertise in the drafting and implementation of all university judicial policies including the university student code of conduct. I had supervisory responsibilities with regard to the training, support and evaluation of all university hearing officers and hearing bodies, including university hearing boards and appeal committees. I also had supervisory experience in the operation of our off-campus student services office.I was fortunate to develop wonderful working relationships in the dean of students office and to have substantial contact and work with other departments at the university such as career services, academic advising, personal counseling, study abroad and admissions.The most unexpectedly rewarding experience of my career was to serve for three years as co-state representative for my professional association, the Minnesota Chapter of the Association of Student Conduct Administrators (MN/ASCA).
