I departed Fletcher in the summer of 2018 after five terrific years as Dean. I was the 12th Dean in the 80+ year history of The Fletcher School. In my 37 year career as an officer in the US Navy, I rose from Ensign to Admiral, serving nearly seven years in 4-star grade in two Combatant Commander positions. I was a proud surface warfare officer and commanded destroyers and an aircraft carrier strike group at sea, as well as serving multiple tours as a strategic planner in the Pentagon.

U.S. Southern Command is one of five geographic Combatant Commands, each headed by a 4-star officer, reporting directly to the Secretary of Defense. Southern Command is responsible for security cooperation and defense operations in all 45 countries, territories, and waters south of Mexico in Central America, the Caribbean, and South America.

I led over 10,000 Sailors in combat operations in Afghanistan, Iraq, and the North Arabian Sea. We had a dozen capital ships, a hundred aircraft, and key missions in the war on terror for a dynamic two year period -- with 75% at sea.

BARRY won the Battenberg Cup as the top ship in the Atlantic Fleet, the Ney Award for food service, the Golden Anchor for retention, two Battle E awards, and the Thompson Trophy for combat readiness. We sailed in operations off Haiti, the Balkans, and the Arabian Gulf and were at sea about 80% of the two plus years I was in command.
