I have always had a passion for construction and building design. When I was a kid, I wanted to build a fort in my backyard. Without realizing it, I created my first set of “Construction Documents”, detailing as much as a nine-year-old could with a No. 2 pencil and “Trapper Keeper” notebook. I figured I needed to plan out how I wanted to build it and what materials it would require. In a High school drafting class, I got my first experience with AutoCAD (version 9… not 2009, DOS version 9). As I got older, I took several apprentice jobs including framing houses, plumbing, and hanging fire sprinklers. In my first full time position involving design, I was hired to work for a design/build general contractor, where I got to spend days and nights teaching myself AutoCAD and create drawings for new construction and renovation projects. In 2004, while working for a small commercial and residential architecture firm, I convinced the owner that Revit was the best tool to design, document, coordinate, and visualize all our projects, and we fully embraced what would later be known as a BIM Environment.Since those early days of my career, I have immersed myself in AEC industry technology and how it impacts design and construction. The buildings we occupy, for any purpose, are inherently one of the greatest influencers on our lives. We should take as much care to design and construct the environments we inhabit as we do with anything else, and our world of technology is a key factor to how that care is given.When I’m not designing buildings, I can typically be found in my woodshop, on the golf course, in the kitchen, or sitting at the dining room table playing games with family and friends.
