If you are a new CIO and it seems a bit of a mystery, let's talk. I will spend an hour or so with you discussing how you can first survive and then thrive in the C-Suite. Just promise to donate $50 to your favorite charity. CIO half-life is 4.3 years- Korn Ferry. That is disturbing in the extreme, especially if you have spent 10 or even 20 years preparing for this opportunity. That’s a long commute home after getting fired from your dream job. Of course, there are as many reasons for failure as there are people. The most common reason is that CIOs fail to get the money. If you can’t get the budget, you can’t succeed. In the first 2 years as a CIO your single largest challenge will be developing the budgeting skills of your staff. No money, no fun! To get the money you will also have to train your staff how to conceive and then develop strategies. Most IT/digital people think of strategy as a lot of interesting and possibly even useful “stuff”. This immature thinking is guaranteed to fail. As your budgeting and strategic thinking capabilities grow, all the other skills of your staff will rapidly improve. Almost like magic!
Listed skills include Business Intelligence, It Strategy, Strategic Partnerships, Vendor Management, and 26 others.
