Kakao is one of the biggest tech-companies in Korea. Kakaotalk is #1 messaging app in Korea, which has 44M MAU. Kakao Gift is a core commerce service of Kakao, an in-app commerce attached to the kakaotalk messaging app. The team's DAU has grown from 0.9M to 1.9M and monthly revenue has grown from $2.5M to $16M while I was in the team. Scaled existing services to meet rapid user/traffic growth- Migrated a monolithic backend into 12 microservices on docker with thrift/REST interface for three years to achieve scalability and faster feature deployment. Led and designed 3 microservice migration projects. Feature deploy cycle got ~1.5x faster. Servers can be elastically scaled according to traffic. Servers endured 6~10x QPS surges during seasonal promotion periods.- Rewrote “My order and received gifts” microservice completely, while keeping frontend pages being served. Designed and conducted a simulation test to confirm frontend consistency, covering 99% of cases. No single issue was reported after launch.- Migrated order/privacy-related data according to the newly introduced regulation. Order/privacy-related rows should be separated into physically-separated database for all inactive users. Without affecting ongoing service, separated databases with 200M+ rows.implemented new features for diverse business requirements- Implemented a feature sending gifts in anonymous chat rooms, which takes up +30% of the total messaging traffic. Built and conducted end-to-end tests using Selenium stack. Minimum +8% of growth in DAU and revenue is expected. - Implemented friends’ birthday notification service. It links users to a page that shows gift recommendations which are customized for friends’ preference/taste. The feature led +10% of more revenue and traffic. Implemented frontend pages and backend.
