I am a First Year student studying Bachelor of Dental Health Science/Masters of Dentistry at Griffith University. Previously, I studied and completed the Bachelor of Vision Science at the University of New South Wales, which has helped shape my extensive knowledge within the healthcare field. Whilst Optometry is an invaluable profession, my first-hand experiences with my orthodontist and the memorable interactions I have had with my dentist have fuelled my interest in the dental profession. Outside of my studies, I enjoy doing long-distance running as well as playing team sports such as netball. I am excited to undertake this journey where I will be broadening my knowledge and skillset on a day-to-day basis.My past experiences have helped me gain a range of transferable skill sets which will prove to be invaluable in the dental industry. These include:- Teamwork: Working as a team in social sports have strengthened my interpersonal skills, where I have directed the team members across the court and offered feedback on the team's performance after every match. -Communication and empathy: As a private academic tutor, I learnt the importance of adapting one's communication method according to each student. When communicating with younger students such as those in primary school, I take particular care when simplifying complex concepts, ensuring that I use easy layman terms, mindmaps, analogies, and flowcharts to facilitate their understanding. As a health professional, having these communication skills are important as they need to simplify difficult medical terms for the patient. -Manual dexterity: Having played piano from a young age and excelled in Arts throughout High School, I have developed crucial fine motor skills and attention to detail which will be valuable as a dentist.
