Utilized biochemical and molecular biology expertise to study the role of Rel and TIPE proteins in immunology and inflammation. Evaluated library of small molecule inhibitors of c-Rel previously designed by Chen lab in terms of solubility, efficacy, and potency using molecular, cellular, biochemical, and in vivo methods. Project is on-going, with the goal of reaching a clinical treatment for autoimmune diseases by structural modifications of current compounds. Studied role of TIPE and TIPE2 in T-cell activation and effector function. Collaborated with Dr. Qingguo Ruan and discovered that TIPE and TIPE2 affect T-cell activity through regulation of F-actin formation. Worked closely with Dr. Qingguo Ruan to monitor miR-21 regulation of T-cell apoptosis through direct targeting of TIPE2 gene.

Conducted research on the functions and regulations of amplified genes in lung cancer while acquiring knowledge of related molecular, cellular, and biochemical techniques.Assisted Dr. Mu with setting up the lab as the first member of the lab team. Explored regulation of TTF-1 and NKX2-8 from the angle of miRNAs and identified first miRNA to directly target TTF-1:miR-365. Results were presented in first-author publication. Identified three miRNAs that targeted and down regulated NKX2-8. Aided Dr. Aaron Runkle of Mu lab with TTF-1 regulation of Occludin project.

Under the mentoring of Dr. Liwei Ma, participated in the research of the function of CSIG (cellular senescence-inhibited gene) protein in cellular senescence.
