NISSEN RICHARDS studio was established in 2010. We specialise in architecture, exhibition and theatre design.Pippa Nissen was previously a founding partner of award winning architectural practice Nissen Adams, and Jim Richards joined a year later from Richards Partington Architects where he had been director for eight years.Pippa is an architect and a theatre designer – professions that involve creating spaces and environments that support and enhance the life within them. Her work on theatre sets and films has influenced and enriched her architectural work and visa versa, often by using theatre work as a test bed of ideas and techniques for the larger projects.Jim brings over fifteen years experience and technical expertise in the design and construction of many types of architectural projects ranging in scale and typology.At NISSEN RICHARDS studio these skills are brought together so that the boundaries between disciplines are reduced and interaction between them is encouraged. Our architectural projects range from small scale residential interventions, medium scale mixed-use developments, buildings for the arts, education, commerce and industry, product design and masterplanning. We design new buildings and we enjoy the challenge of working within existing structures and adapting them; creating something contemporary within a building or context that has a history and an existing grain. We believe in an architecture that canchange and adapt to how people use these buildings, how natural and artificial light can change as well as interact within a space and the sensitive use of materials and colours to form a backdrop to our lives.We find that there is a parallel between architecture and set design for the theatre – a building becomes a setting for the light played out within it as it changes and adapts to the functional needs and aspirations of the occupants.
