Harvey Norman are a renowned international retailer with multiple IT teams spanning multiple countries. As a Systems Administrator for Harvey Norman New Zealand, I supported the New Zealand business in all tiers of IT support, in both day-to-day work and project work, in a small Auckland-based team.

Virsae offer a Unified Communications Systems management tool and I was employed as a Software Developer in the Core Team. The Virsae development team utilize Agile practices including Scrum, using Jira to track stories, and use SVN for version control. In addition, all work is peer reviewed, and supporting interns as required was expected.The Core Team are primarily responsible for creating and maintaining key features in the back-end as well as the web pages which utilize these features. This work can be split into three distinct areas:- ASP.NET MVCASP.NET MVC drives the user experience and as a member of the core team, I was responsible forcontributing towards writing features in C# (controller and model), HTML, and TypeScript (view).- Database ManagementData at Virsae was stored on MS SQL servers and so I was responsible for writing Stored Procedures as well as creating and maintaining tables.- Probe MaintenanceVirsae deployed probes at customer sites to extract information and I was responsible for making changes to these probes when added functionality was required. This was all done in C#.

In this role, I was a developer, coding in C++ in a Linux environment, using Git as our primary version control tool, working closely with the hardware team (and somewhat with the mechanical team). I had a huge range of impacts on the projects I worked on, including: end-to-end communications over radio, UI (graphical, sound, and input), and others. I was also responsible for peer reviewing code and bug identifying and fixing.

Key responsibilities included:- Procurement of computers, consumables, licenses, phones etc.- Maintaining positive relationships with staff and vendors- Day to day maintenance of network and back-up solutions- Maintenance of telephony solutions- Prioritizing and solving help desk queries- Web development on both internal and external websites- Writing login scripts- Fixing computer problems remotely, either via tools such as TeamViewer or just via communication- Setting up for events e.g. Mystery Creek Fieldays

This role had me working with, in both a pastoral and a tutorial role, first year Computer Science students with the Tuakana program at the University of Auckland. With the Tuakana program targeting Maori and Pasifika students (who are the most at risk of falling behind or failing in their first year), this role had a multitude of challenges but was highly rewarding, as I had been through the program myself.This role was largely unsupervised which, while providing its own set of unique challenges, allowed me to be creative with the way I taught and handled my interactions with the students.

This role had 2 aspects: one which had me working in the CompSci101 labs, assisting the head tutor in tutorials, and the other as a manager of a room of computers, assisting students where necessary. Both roles required innate knowledge of computer science as well as the ability to be personable to a whole range of students in often stressful environments (due to the pressures of university).
