Making development finance work, both transactional and, for more than a decade, as legal manager, working with and leading teams like no other on both debt side (with a focus on renewable energy project finance, agri-bussiness and financial institutions), as well as on the private equity side (including venture capital, 'direct' private equity, fund management and blended finance). I have a particular interest in gender finance, forestry, nature and biodiversity finance. In 2022 I resigned from my managerial role to again focus on transactions, and create space to teach more on e.g. sustainable finance. Stand-out achievements include the [1] aligning business and legal teams in the creation and implementation of a risk-based approach of servicing for both debt and equity, [2] innovating ahead of the curve, such as electronic signing before the pandemic, Aand the use of legal design for our clients, [3] aligning multiple stakeholders to establish uniform documentation and mindsets, [4] protecting and empowering debt and equity teams through challenging corporate restructurings, [5] engaging with and supporting clients on the ground, for instance through leadership projects in Bangladesh and Myanmar, and [6] last but not least negotiating strategic projects with stakeholders, such as the Dutch government and the European Commission.My portfolio covers a wide spectrum of development and sustainable finance across Africa, Latin America and Asia: renewable energy projects (hydro, wind and ethanol projects), debt capital markets (health project bonds, green, covered bonds and securitisations - microfinance, CLO and future flow / DPR, a wide range of syndicated lending products across emerging markets, as well as microfinance and local currency products, structured guarantees, corporate and bespoke derivatives, direct (and co-) private equity investments along fund investments, especially debt funds, including fund structuring in a variety of jurisdictions.

Over the years I have taught a variety of courses on financial law for the Melbourne Law School with its formidable faculty and excellent support team, from Securitisation, Derivatives, Debt Capital Markets and International Financial Transactions to (my personal favorites) International Sustainable Finance and Impact Investing. What stands out for me is the engagement with and high appreciation from students (consistently scored 9 out of 10) in my International Sustainable Finance Law & Practice course. Privileged to teach in the wonderful surroundings of Sydney Law School, bringing together smart legal minds from the Asia Pacific and beyond. I currently teach two units, International Financial Transactions and International Sustainable Finance. The first is an introductory one. The second builds on the first. It challenges and empowers students to challenge the status quo in the financial markets (on ESG and sustainability) through legal means. We will be exploring sustainable finance and corporate responsibility, digging in the accountability of corporates, governments and financial market participants for their contribution to the 2030 Sustainability Development, Net Zero and human rights due diligence. Climate and sustainability litigation strategies will also feature.
