I am a software engineer turned Instructional Designer with a passion for training and a purpose of serving others. I create training that is based on adult learning principles; is learner centered and is outcome focused. My goal is not simply for participants to learn the material in the course. My goal is for them to gain skills, knowledge and insight that helps them perform their job better and make a bigger contribution to their organization. I lean on my engineering background to do this….♦ I spend time to understand the problems the organization wants to address. This helps determine if training is part of the solution, and what kind of training will give the best results.♦ I start at the end and work backwards. To identify the desired outcomes, determine the behaviors necessary to achieve the outcomes and train the knowledge or skills necessary to consistently perform the behaviors.♦ I engage participants by addressing their needs as a learner. By ensuring that they understand how the session is relevant; by delivering material in a real-world context and by using their own experience as a frame of reference.♦ I plan for follow through. Training doesn’t end with the certificate of completion. I consider what support learners will need back on the job so they can be successful, and consider how the organization can determine if training has improved on-the-job performance.
