Celebrated British mezzo soprano Jennifer Johnston is a distinguished performer in opera, concert and recital. Winner of multiple awards including the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Singer of the Year and Gramophone’s Recording of the Year, she is a former BBC New Generation Artist, and has “one of the most generous and beautiful voices in the business” (Prospect Magazine). Her debut solo album ‘A Love Letter To Liverpool’ (Rubicon Classics) features the iTunes No.1 hit single ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra & Choir, for whom she was their Artist In Residence.Her opera career has seen over 80 performances as a principal guest artist at the Bayerische Staatsoper, and she has also sung leading roles at La Scala, the Salzburg Festival, Glyndebourne Festival, English National Opera and the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. She has appeared with many of the world’s most distinguished orchestras and conductors, including the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, London Symphony, BBC Symphony, Bavarian Radio Symphony, Royal Concertgebouw, and Cleveland orchestras with K. Petrenko, V. Petrenko, Mäkelä, Bychkov, Rouvali, Oramo, Hrusa, Linttu, Gardner, Welser-Möst, Zinman, Slatkin, Harding and Rattle. Her extensive discography includes Payne’s arrangement of Vaughan Williams’ Four Last Songs with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Brabbins (Albion Records) commissioned for her by the BBC, which she premiered at the BBC Proms (Vänskä/BBCSO) and was nominated for a GRAMMY award. She has a successful creative consultancy, and her clients include the London Transport Museum and other national museums, combined authorities, local and borough councils, symphony orchestras, opera companies, foundations, festivals and composers. Her expertise rests in bringing culture, especially sound and music, into spaces where it has only had hitherto limited exposure, developing creative projects from inception with artistic organisations, and developing partnerships to unite communities via culture and the arts. She is Patron of Destination Opera and the Southport Bach Choir, a member of the Liverpool City Region Music Board, Performing Arts Network lead at the Royal Society of Arts, and a contributing writer for publications including Opera Now, the Guardian and the Stage, and a broadcaster and commentator on the arts for BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio 3, Classic FM and Times Radio. A former barrister, she received the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Enterprise Award, supporting her participation in Harvard University’s Women In Leadership programme.
