Initiated IBM's outreach to quantum computer startups and their VC investors, exploring a variety of partnerships, joint development relationships and corporate direct investments. Additional focus on AI chip and infrastructure startups. Numerous small projects in additional areas, including network virtualization, enterprise AI, enterprise storage and geospatial information systems. Represented IBM as executive speaker at numerous venture capital and quantum computer industry events.

Explored commercialization options for a network virtualization research project in IBM Yorktown Research, include forming a venture capital funded startup spinout.

Focused on patent acquisition to fuel Tessera's core business of IP licensing

M&A focused on startups developing visual processing algorithms, including face/iris/image recognition, automotive visual navigation and biometrics sensors and algorithms.

Projects include sourcing new deals and conducting due diligence for prospective new investments in information technology, energy and security startups. Paladin Capital is a venture capital firm investing in companies whose commercial products can also be applied to solve homeland security and national security issues, also known as dual-use.

Explored spinouts and other strategic opportunities for an advanced computer vision project.

Recruited to fix distressed portfolio companies and transitioned into leading new deals. Lead investor in research spinout AutoESL, spun out of the UCLA computer science department and acquired by Xilinx (NASDAQ:XLNX) Member of the investment team and the General Partnership. Responsible for all aspects of deal management, including sourcing, diligence, issuing term sheets and negotiating deal terms, board membership and governance, operational navigation, securing follow-on financing and generating exits. Adams Capital had $800 million under management across four funds. Served on the boards of AutoESL, Timesys (Chairman) and BrightScale. Investment interests include a broad range of IT and technology segments, including SaaS, virtualization, storage management, open-source software, systems management, security, embedded systems, consumer electronics, alternative energy, materials, design tools and semiconductors.

Timesys is a venture-funded supplier of customized Linux distributions, development tools and open-source software applications for embedded systems spun out of Carnegie Mellon University. Re-focused the company strategy and product line, hired a new VP of Engineering and hired the permanent CEO as my replacement. The company is now tracking well and has been cash-flow positive for the past ten years.

NuCORE Technology was a 55-person venture-funded software and semiconductor company enabling the creation of the first digital cameras. Successfully raised $30 million in venture funding in Series B and Series C rounds from the following investors: Sigma Partners, TechFund Capital, Horizon Ventures, JAFCO Japan, J.P. Morgan Partners. Grew staff from the 6 Japanese founders to 55 employees. Hired the executive staff: VP Engineering, VP Operations, CFO, VP Marketing, Japan President. Released to production the company’s first chipset and closed major design wins with Panasonic and JVC. Secured design wins at Panasonic for the Lumix prosumer digital camera line, resulting in cameras ranked in the top ten cameras in Japan in 2001. Secured design wins at JVC for their professional camcorders. The company was showcased at HotChips 2000 at Stanford University, selected by EDN Magazine as one of the Hot 100 Products of 2000, and acquired by MediaTek for $70 million.

Corporate entity for investing / advising venture capital firms and portfolio companies

Led product-focused business unit, managing 100 scientists and engineers. Grew revenue from $55 million to $100 million and hired 60+ scientists and engineers. Led creation of a $45 million, 6-year R&D partnership with IBM.
