My doctoral work focused on the development of a bi-directional Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) for neuroprosthetic control and virtual sensory feedback. This work included 1) design and characterization of chronic micro-Electrocorticographic (ECoG) electrodes with conductive coatings, 2) design of a stimulation artifact suppressing amplifier capable of recording neural signals during simultaneous stimulation, 3) development of co-adaptive algorithms for 4-dimensional ECoG BCI control, and 4) development of the first bi-directional BCI with simultaneous neural recording and stimulation. Other work included the design and evaluation of precision macro-sieve nerve interface for functional electrical stimulation and neuro-musculoskeletal modeling of limb movement to study optimal control strategies.
