During my MRes Medicine degree, I undertook a nine-month research project focusing on generating transient knockdown models of 3D in vitro and ex vivo ‘tumour-on-chip’ models of glioblastoma, using self-delivering siRNA. Within the project, I gained experience working with multiple patient derived glioblastoma cell lines in 2D and 3D spheroid cultures (96 well format), ex vivo ‘tumour-on-chip’ microfluidics models of intact patient tissue, siRNA transfections, chemoradiotherapy treatment of in vitro/ ex vivo models, RT-qPCR, cell-based cytotoxicity/viability assays and confocal microscopy.

My Bachelor’s degree project, undertaken in the Robinson Laboratory at the Quadram Institute (Norwich Research Park), sought to understand how two VEGFR-2 co-receptors, NRP1 and NRP2, influenced pathological angiogenesis in breast cancer.Primarily, the project involved IHC of breast cancer tumour tissue excised from WT or NRP1/NRP2 dual knockout mice. I was responsible for sectioning over 100 tissue sections, staining for various phosphorylated proteins associated with VEGFR-2 downstream signalling cascades, and imaging slides to assess the abundance of phosphorylated angiogenic proteins within WT and NRP1/NRP2 KO mice breast cancer tumour microvasculature. Additionally, the project also gave me exposure to in vitro endothelial cell culture, VEGF-a signalling assays and Western Blotting.
