About Jeff Cleveland
My interests lie within the overly broad fields of data analysis, distributed systems and robotics. This has provided me the opportunity to be involved with projects focusing on very large scale computation, i.e., Big Data, giving me an excuse to play with platforms such as Spark, Storm, Hadoop, Hive, Presto, Redshift, Snowflake, Accumulo, MongoDB, Kafka, Airflow, Snowplow, etc. For the last few years I have also concentrated on growing my skills as a manager of both individual contributors, tech leads, and other managers.Currently I am the Director of Data at Buoy Health - Buoy's Data Organization is comprised of three amazing teams: Data Engineering, Analytics, and Data Science. As the Director of this organization I manage, guide, and mentor the managers of our Analytics and Data Science teams as well as directly managing our Data Engineering team.Prior to my time at Buoy I was a Principal Software Engineer on TripAdvisor's Analytics and Measurement team; while at TripAdvisor I also filled several other roles including as the Technical Manager for the Data Warehouse team and as the tech lead for Mobile Analytics. Prior to that I was at VMWare where I worked on an analytics framework as part of the vTelemetry Team, and before that I was a researcher in the Distributed Systems group at Raytheon BBN Technologies.I received both my B.S (2008) and M.S. (2011) in Computer Science from UMass Amherst.
Listed skills include Software Engineering, Distributed Systems, Apache Spark, Apache Storm, and 20 others.

Principal Software Engineer - Data Platform / Cloud Data Services
CurrentAs a Principal Engineer and Tech Lead within the TripAdvisor Data Platform team I am responsible for expanding and maintaining our home-grown ETL orchestration engine (built with Kotlin, Java, & Spring Boot), administering our Snowflake instance, and building tools and utilities to support both Data and Product Engineering teams. I played a pivotal role in the migration from our on-prem Hadoop cluster to a purely cloud based data lake composed primarily of Snowflake and S3; this included the development of zero-etl / change-data-capture based solutions for propagating data from OLTP databases into Snowflake. I have been very active in TripAdvisor’s adoption of Working Groups to increase engineering excellence. Specifically I am a founding member in both the Data Working Group and the Domain Working Group. The Data Working Group aims to standardize, promote, and enforce data best practices across the Data, Product, and Engineering organizations. Similarly the Domain Working Group has created a set of guidelines and best practices relating to domain boundaries and domain-to-domain interactions. I specifically have helped bridge the gap between our Engineering organizations pursuit of domain-driven-design and our Data Organization's utilization of a Data Mesh based architecture.
Senior Manager Of Data Warehouse Engineering
I was brought in to Transfix to lead an existing Data Warehouse team and a newly formed Looker admin/BI team within the Data Organization. After some organizational changes I ended up splitting my time primarily between managing our remaining Data Engineers, building DBT models, Airflow DAGs, and handling Looker administration tasks.

Member Of Technical Staff
I served as a software developer within the vTelemetry team at VMware. I was working on a prototype analytics platform designed specifically for software engineers to analyze telemetry data collected by their products. My focus during the project was on the development of (1) a backend processing engine built ontop of Apache Spark, (2) a just-in-time data model which seamlessly accesses data from a local in-memory cache or a remote MongoDB instance, and (3) a Javascript/HTML 5 GUI providing the engineer with an interactive analytics solution.
Software Engineer / Staff Scientist
As a Software Engineer / Staff Scientist within the Distributed Systems group at BBN my responsibilities included business development, customer interactions, writing proposals, publishing papers and of course performing research. I served as the Technical Lead on several research projects focused around Information Management Systems (IMS) capable of providing rich pub-sub-query functionality. I have also contributed to work in the areas of design modification tools, spatial computing, trusted computing, and cross-domain research. Highly scalable computing, i.e., Big Data, has been the focus of several research projects I had been involved with at BBN. I served as the Technical Lead on SCIMITAR where we prototyped a distributed pub-sub-query information management system (built using Storm and MongoDB) and demonstrated horizontal scalability within Amazon EC2. I was also brought onto BBAC to increase the projects scalability by migrating the pre-processing, SVM training, classification, and data storage to Big Data platforms, namely Storm, Hadoop, and Accumulo.Additionally, I served as the Information Knowledge Technology representative on an inter-departmental Big Data working group.
