Shift Commander - B/C

Employed as Firefighter/EMT in 1990, promoted to Shift Commander August of 1992 and held that responsibility until December 2013. Was responsible every third day for 19 career as well as a staff of part-time and volunteer (P.O.C) personnel, providing fire and EMS response / transport services and all hazards response out of four (4) Fire Stations in a suburban setting. Early in career, established and set goals for departmental I.S.O. improvement, ultimately achieving the highest possible rating (Class 1). Also responsible for specifications and purchasing of department mobile apparatus and equipment, which included standardization of entire apparatus fleet, both in design of apparatus and equipment carried. Initiated records and inventory systems of department equipment, including annual testing and maintenance of hose, appliances, ladders, pumps, etc... Initiated plans for a station relocation and construction along with several station expansions and remodels, as well as a training center/burn building & pump test pit facility, intent of Training Center to be a Regional site. Initiated a certification training program for all new personnel, with goals of everyone attaining NPQ certifications this evolved into all personal achieving appropriate NPQ Firefighter/Fire Officer levels within the department. Early on, developed a Part-Time firefighter staffing program to offset Full Time personnel off days, eventually evolving to eight Part-Time personnel assigned to each of three 19 person shifts (27 personnel per Shift), further supplemented by Volunteer (POC/POP). This Part-Time program was eventually duplicated by several other area departments, as no area agencies had previously attempted this model.
