I don't have a typical working history. In fact I don't have much of a "normal" job experience aside from coaching and working as a secretary for about a year. Why, you may ask? I have played volleyball since I was 10 years old. When I turned 14 I started training twice a day and made the junior national team which meant I didn't have any time to work a summer job. At 21 I became a professional volleyball player and I'm still active in my career. I also represent Finland's national team (which again means, no summer jobs to rack up my working experience). However, sports has given me possibilities and experiences one could only dream of having. I have lived in different countries, worked with multiple sponsor companies, learned to utilize my own personal social media to increase income et cetera. I have helped organize events for my clubs and participated in fundraising on multiple occasions. When I played in Switzerland, I learned Italian in about 4 months because my coach didn't speak a word of English. I have had to learn to adjust and make the best of difficult situations in every turn of my career. Perhaps the most important lessons this sport has ever taught me are about teamwork, leadership and independence. I believe there is no other job that can provide lessons in these skills as effectively and powerfully as competitive team sports. I'm not naïve though and I know it is not physically possible to remain a professional athlete for your whole life. Nor do I want to be one of those athletes who has no direction for their life after ending their professional career. I personally am pretty much as ambitious academically as I am with sports and have maintained an 4,21/5 average in university throughout my professional volleyball career. As mentioned earlier, I do also have some traditional working experience and I'm currently gaining more as my university's EU Careers Student ambassador. Despite this, I choose to highlight the experiences I have gained through volleyball. They have made me who I am today and I believe they are the reasons that will make me an amazing employee for whomever I end up working for.
