I am a clinical investigator in the Division of Pain Medicine in the Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School. I have over a decade of clinical research training and experience in the fields of pediatric pain, mental and behavioral health, sleep medicine, and biomedical informatics. As director of the Laboratory for Digital Assessment, Research, and Treatment in the Division of Pain Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital, I am developing, testing, and implementing a comprehensive and dynamic framework for integrating digital and mobile health solutions to reliably and consistently provide time-sensitive and ecologically valid assessments of important functional, emotional and behavioral outcomes in both our hospital settings and the patient’s natural settings. These include behavioral patterns, sleep, pain, physical mobility, motor activity, energy expenditure and cognitive functioning. My approach emphasizes using various modalities operating in parallel (electronic health records, biosensors, patient reported outcomes) to build robust models that are both scalable and yet also tailored to idiosyncrasies at the single patient level. We combine these data sources with real world data to complementing discoveries from RCTs and laboratory settings in predicting pathological trajectories in children and adolescents and evaluating risks and benefits of interventions. Further, we develop, test and administer mobile health interventions in our patient' real-life contexts to support them when they are most vulnerable and at highest risk, as well as most receptive to the intervention.
