  • Evenup
    Chief Technology Officer
    Evenup Jun 2013 - Dec 2015
As one of the initial employees at EvenUp I wore many hats getting the company off of the ground. Initially I helped with the naming, logo design, and branding of EvenUp. As CTO I was responsible for the overall delivery of our SaaS application to our customers. This included leading the development team designing our application architecture, technologies used, and REST API with two of our main goals being highly fault tolerant and horizontally scalable.EvenUp was designed from the beginning to run in the cloud and was architected for failure. I implemented many AWS services for our application deployment and architecture including VPCs, EC2 for computing resources, S3 for distributed block storage, SQS for message passing between service clusters, Route53 for internal and external DNS, and Redshift for ad-hoc queries.Automation was a key component of the architecture of EvenUp. All hosts and services were provisioned with puppet allowing a failure of virtually any part of the EvenUp infrastructure to be rebuilt quickly without human interaction. New hosts and provisioned services were automatically added to our Sensu monitoring system as well as shipping both system and application logs to Logstash for centralized aggregation and analysis. When we decided to get SSAE certified, the automation and controls it provided were a large reason we were able to achieve a SOC2 certification our first year. I deployed Lita (a ruby-based chatbot) and wrote custom plugins to help us maintain our infrastructure and to provide a consistent and communal method for handling alerts and making changes to our environment. Along with the Lita plugins, I also wrote most of our AngularJS web interface and some services to integrate with 3rd parties such as Twillio.
  • Local Matters, Inc.
    Director Of It
Local Matters, Inc. Jun 2011 - Nov 2011
As the Director of IT I was responsible for both helpdesk personnel as well as datacenter design and operations. Through my leadership we were able to decrease our response time to both datacenter and helpdesk tickets. Through increased use of puppet we significantly decreased new server build time and almost eliminated issues caused my mis-configurations. Expanding Local Matter's use of virtualization to fully utilize their hardware I was able to retire old inefficient hardware reducing total datacenter costs.
  • Ften
    Global Infrastructure Director
    Ften Oct 2007 - Jun 2011
    New York, Ny, Us
At FTEN I evolved the infrastructure from a single datacenter of hand built snowflake machines to hundreds of self-configuring servers located in 5 datacenters in the United States, Canada, and Europe. As the Global Infrastructure Director I was a hands on manager responsible for managing a team of highly skilled Network and System Engineers, datacenter selection and buildouts including design and purchasing, installation, and maintenance and upgrades.Working closely with developers and client support I automated server builds and application installs through the use of puppet. Individual nodes were configured through a web application I wrote which allowed various groups within FTEN to easily configure services with validation and business logic. When FTEN was acquired by NASDAQ OMX, the infrastructure I designed and was responsible for was processing over 30% of the US equity flow.
  • Ecollege
    Linux And Storage Administrator
    Ecollege Jun 2006 - Oct 2007
I was brought on board to configure and deploy a Linux application and quickly became the primary Linux administrator for eCollege as well as a Storage Adminitrator. As a Linux Administrator, I was responsible for configuring, monitoring, and ensuring the uptime of eCollege's Linux application clusters serving virtual classroom tools as well as ensuring the Linux hosts themselves were kept up to date with security patches. Working with the networking team, I proved NIC bonding provided not only greater bandwidth to individual machines, but increased uptime of hosts during network downtimes. As a Storage Administrator, I was responsible making configuration changes and upgrades to the existing EVA SANs and NetApp filers, as well as powering on and configuring new EVAs and filers in a DR facility.
