The mission of the World Heart Federation is to unite its Members and lead the global fight for cardiovascular health.

Main achievements:• Identify with the FDI leadership strategic focus development, with a successful implementation.• Restore financial stability and profitability after 5 years of deficit. From 1 Mio deficit in 2010 back to 1.3 Mio surplus in 2013.• Develop relations with corporate partners. Secure the renewal of important contracts and diversify revenue streams.• Create new business model around the annual congress. Turn it into a profit making. Abstract submission multiplied by 4 over 2 years.

• Management of an international professional medical association under the leadership of an Executive Committee. • Administrative and financial management, budgeting, implementation of efficient cost-control measures (starting with a deficit of €1.6 Mio in 2007, profit of €0.9 Mio in 2009, forecast profit of €2.0 Mio in 2010). • Organisation restructuring, including creation of an HR policy, team building, coaching and staff training programme. • Tight interactions with the pharmaceutical industry leading to an increase of sponsorship and fundraising (+23% from 2007 to 2010). • Identification of strategic development axis, strategic positioning; implementation of a revised branding along with adapted services.• New strategy for membership recruitment (+50% new members in 2010 compared to 2009).• Development of lay press/media activities at the local and European level (Year of the Lung & World Spirometry Day) through the European Lung Foundation, the ERS organisation dedicated to patient information.

• Organisation of the ERS Annual Congress (+161% attendance growth over 11 years, up to 22,200 delegates, the largest meeting in the world) and other scientific and educational events, under the leadership of the Scientific Committee.• Development and implementation of strategic planning towards the harmonisation of training and certification at the European level, including syllabus, examination, live training events, e-learning.• Launch and develop successfully a new concept of educational magazine, including market study, revenue streams, content and distribution.• Strategical planning and development of the e-learning ERS website www.ers-education.org, offering the largest knowledge database in respiratory medicine, with leading technologies.• Responsible for communication with the membership (2001-2003).
