Jul 2019 - Present

Phd Candidate

Leiden

I analysed the changes in late Medieval state financing in the Low Countries, in the research project 'Demise of the domain'. The research focusses on the supposed deminishing importance of revenues from domains/demesnes, and the supposed rise of the tax state. The study is funded by the NWO (Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research). The study has two main results. First, by analysing the use of princely domains to secure or reward financial, military, political or ecclesiastical support, I show the continuing importance of the domains in this period. The domains or ordinairy revenue streams were still the most important source of income for princes in the late middle ages (prior to the Burgundian take-over). However, the direct income from domains was given up to secure loans via mortgaging. This indirect use of domains raised enormous sums against a relatively low interest rate.Second, I show the political importance of these domains for the regional elite, by analysing how the mortgaging of princely domains featured in negotiations on taxes, between prince and elite. On the one hand members of the local elite were involved in mortgaging the domains, thus diminishing the future income of the prince. On the other hand, they objected this use of the domains, and claimed that the revenue from taxes should be used to redeem mortgaged domains.

Research Assistent

As an assistant to prof. dr. M.P.C.van der Heijden, within the NWO project 'Crime and Gender', I collected, transcribed and translated, and analysed data of the lower court ('Correctionele Rechtbank') of Rotterdam in the period 1812-1838. The data was later used for two articles, published in 'Tijdschrift voor Criminologie' (2015) 4, and Stadsgeschiedenis 10.2 (2015). This first article shows that modern criminological theories about work and marriage having a negative impact on crime, don't work in the nineteenth century context. The second article shows how property crime was used next to legal jobs, to generate income, in nineteenth century Rotterdam. Both articles are co-authored by Bjorn Gallee.
