Marta E. Gross Associate Professor Of Biomedical EngineeringPurdue University Aug 2021 - PresentUnited StatesWork in the Linnes Lab emphasizes the application of fundamental microfluidic principles and biological assays to develop point-of-care diagnostics for global health and wearable devices that enable health disparities research. Research in the lab focuses on advances in paper microfluidics, molecular biosensors, and human-centered instrumentation design to enable sensitive, robust, and rapid diagnostics for informed healthcare decision-making.Research in the lab and experience with user-centered design and co-founding companies is applied in my teaching of undergraduate design, graduate level instrumentation measurement and point-of-care diagnostics, and workshops around the world. -

Instructor, Be 428: Device And Diagnostics DesignBoston University Sep 2013 - Dec 2014Boston, MaRedesigning and instructing BE 428, a project-based course developing fundamentals of the design aspects of biomedical devices and diagnostics. Basic theory, case studies, prototyping sessions, and homework are applied towards needs identification, materials selection, and failure mode evaluation. The course culminates in a final functional prototype solution to a medical device and/or diagnostic challenge and students provide written and oral presentations of this work to clinicians, designers, and engineers from the Boston area. -
Postdoctoral Associate, Biomedical EngineeringBoston University Jan 2012 - Dec 2014Boston, MaDesign and development of molecular diagnostics for point of care detection of infectious diseases including pertussis (whooping cough), African trypanosimiasis (sleeping sickness), and sexually transmitted infections. Developing and integrating assays and instrumentation for cell lysis and nucleic acid extraction, isothermal amplification, and visual lateral flow detection (a la pregnancy tests) to enable point of care molecular diagnostics in low-resource settings. -
Postdoctoral Research FellowBrigham And Women'S Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Mit Innovations In International Health Jan 2011 - Jun 2012Greater Boston AreaDesigned novel upper-room air ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) systems for hospital use in low-resource settings to prevent tuberculosis and other airborne disease transmission.Investigated UV LED and whole-ceiling models as novel UVGI alternatives and set UVGI implementation standards that ensure resource appropriate materials and manufacturing capabilitiesLed the mobile diagnostics initiative at IIH to combine mobile health technologies with low-cost diagnostics -

Phd In BioengineeringUniversity Of Washington Sep 2004 - Dec 2010My PhD research as an NSF Fellow in Dr. James Bryers’s Lab focused on hospital acquired infections caused by bacterial adhesion to medical devices. This involved developing adhesion dependent protein isolation from Staphylococcus epidermidis (SE) bacterial cells. I focused on SE’s giant extracellular matrix binding protein, Embp, and its involvement in specific adhesion to fibronectin and osmotic stress resistance during adherent growth. These experiments utilized microfluidic flow chambers to grow and image bacterial adhesion and detachment, as well as qRT-PCR, western blotting, and flow cytometry to examine Embp gene and protein expression under various growth conditions. -
