Scatchet Head Water District is a small water district on the southern tip of Whidbey Island with 412 connections. I have been elected as one of the three Commissioners who administer this water utility. Despite aging infrastructure, we are committed to providing safe and reliable water service to our customers. In accordance with our Water System Plan, we are planning to upgrade the infrastructure while keeping our rates affordable to the residents of Scatchet Head and Cottage Glen.

I relocated to Whidbey Island, WA in 2019 and became a proud member of the inspirational, supportive, and collaborative Whidbey Clay Center.

Contribute to the development and implementation of the academic Minor in Sustainability through adoption or development of courses, support for independent student projects, internships, and research in the areas of environmental, urban and societal sustainability. Teach 3 courses per year, including Introduction to Sustainability, Practicum in Sustainability, and Tackling Food Waste.

Services that may be of interest include professional guidance in environmental decision-making, audit support such as making sense of compliance data, guidance in state and Federal regulatory processes, corporate environmental stewardship, and environmental strategic planning.

Rutgers Honors College

Young African Leaders took part in a seminar series in preparation for their week-long stay in Washington, DC. One of their assignments was to put together a mock proposal for funding for women's rights issues. I was a judge for two group proposals: economic empowerment for women and entrepreneurship and Women and STEM. The African leaders were thorough and thoughtful in putting together their proposals. They were poised and confident in their presentation. It was an amazing experience to see their creative minds working together to present the strongest proposal possible.

Teaching a new course, Introduction to Sustainability, as part of a new Minor in Sustainability. The course provides an overview of perspectives on sustainability including environmental, economic and social considerations. Students will use metrics for measuring components of sustainability, and explain sustainability actions at the local, state, country, and global scales. Students will create an ePortfolio of their work to aid them in applying for internships and jobs. Lectures will be supplemented by a field trip to Bayshore Recycling in Woodbridge, NJ. Guest lecturers will provide linkage to other courses available for students throughout Rutgers University.

Direct the fresh water and marine water monitoring efforts in New Jersey, including chemical, physical, and biological monitoring. Organize the data collected so that an integrated report of the status of the waters of the state can be produced. Lead scientific studies that populate models to provide assessment tools which can be used to allocate the pollution loading across entities for pollution reduction efforts. Oversee the Watershed Ambassador program – to inspire the next generation of water pollution control professionals. "Goal Owner" for the Barnegat Bay Action Plan, one of the Governor's priorities for improving the water quality in Barnegat Bay.

Directed the activities of the Radiation Protection Program, Office of Quality Assurance, Release Prevention Program, Pollution Prevention and Right to Know programs, and Permit Coordination. Participated in nuclear emergency response planning and lead an effort to improve planning for recovery from a nuclear accident. Worked on improvement of the x-ray inspection program, through emphasizing the importance of measuring radiation exposure and image quality. Staff of 160 people, budget of $11M.

Participate as a member of the Steering Committee of the Center for Public Health Preparedness as an expert in chemical, radiological and nuclear emergency preparedness. Present lectures, provide input to curriculum development, and assessment of public health preparedness for New Jersey. Teach graduates and undergraduates in the Preparedness for Weapons of Mass Destruction course.

Direct the activities of the Radiation Protection Program, whose objective is to protect the public and the environment against unnecessary radiation exposure from natural and man-made sources. Three bureaus comprise the program, which encompasses such diverse activities as registration, licensing and inspection of radiation sources, certification of technologists, radon public awareness, certification of radon testing and mitigation firms, low level radioactive waste siting issues, nuclear emergency response, oversight of nuclear power plant activities for environmental releases, and non-ionizing radiation. Participation in nuclear emergency exercises quarterly. Staff of 65 people; budget of $5.5M.

Managed the operations of the Bureau charged with implementation of New Jersey's Community Right-to-Know program. Operations included surveying the regulated community about hazardous substances use, storage and release, developing appropriate computer software to manage the information, pursuing enforcement action against non-compliance, making the information available to the general public and publishing an annual report. Interfaced with members of the regulated community, researchers, government officials, and the general public. Oversight of budget of $l.2 million, employed 20 individuals.
