Commander John Satterfield retired from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) after over 32 1/2 years of honorable service (1991-2024). He worked assignments in custody, court, and patrol operations, including: field training officer (FTO), arrest & control training (ACT), recruit training (RTO), advanced officer training (AOT), Sheriff’s Response Team (SRT), policy & procedure creation, hospital security, public information officer (PIO), field & watch sergeant, watch commander, bureau captain, division commander, and served as LASD Chief of Staff.He was awarded the Life-Saving Medal, Distinguished Service Medal (x2), Exemplary Service Medal (x2), Meritorious Service Award, Unit Commander Award, 10851 Award, and numerous other awards, commendations, and letters of recognition. From 2019-2021, John served as an elected labor union member of the Los Angeles County Professional Peace Officer Association (PPOA) Board of Directors. John served for 6-years as an active-duty U.S. Marine Corps infantryman (7th Marines) from 1985-1991. He is a combat veteran who held the rank of sergeant (E-5) during the Gulf War. He participated in multiple operations during several overseas deployments and received numerous military medals, ribbons, and commendations. Dr. Satterfield earned his Doctor of Education (Ed.D) Degree from the University of Southern California, with a focus on Organizational Change and Leadership. His 2019 dissertation was titled, “Training in Law Enforcement: Infusing 21st-Century Policing Concepts into the Organizational Culture.” He holds a Master of Public Administration (MPA) Degree from National University; Bachelor of Science Degree in Occupational Studies from California State University, Long Beach; Associate in Arts Degree in Administration of Justice from East Los Angeles College; Certificate in Less Lethal Weapons Technologies from Penn State University; and, Certificate in Weapons of Mass Destruction - General Instructor from the Department of Homeland Security. He is a graduate of both the Master Instructor Certification Course (MICC) and Executive Development Course (EDC) from CA POST; and, earned a Certificate in Executive Leadership from the USC Price School of Public Policy. John is the President of Guardian Consulting Corp., which offers 21st-century training solutions as well as State and Federal Court expert testimony in all areas of public safety.John believes leadership's core function is service to others.
